when to go to sippy?
« on: February 06, 2006, 17:04:36 pm »
When did everyone start putting formula (or milk) in the sippy and say so long to bottles? Also, which cups work best for this transition? Regular sippys or straws?

It theory you are supposed to say good-bye to bottles by 12 months. At least that is the case in the States; here in England they are much more laid back and do not insist on it at all. Still I am trying; without much success I must say. The sippy cups which lots of mums recommend is the NUby. Mine hated it and I am using the simplest Tomme Tippee cup. She hates taking milk from it though, in fact she is not a big drinker at all but milk is the worst. The most she has ever taken is 1oz. I just wish some-one had told me to put milk into a sippy straight away...........

With both of my kiddos, I introduced the sippy/straw cup at 6 months.  I live in the states and my goal was to be done by 12 months  :) ;)  I tried many types with John but he took right away to the straw cup and so with Zoe, I just used a straw cup right away (this way they didn't have to get the "tipping back" part of it right away).  Once they get really good at it, I took away the bottles and gave them the sippy with their meals.  John was on all sippys at 8 months and Zoe was too except the bedtime bottle which we then switched over at 12 months.  And agree with the above poster about putting milk in it.  I, personally, wouldn't put water or juice in the sippy until she gets the milk down.  I've heard lots of times where their kiddos will take a sippy, but not for milk.

Try not to stress over the sippy though, it's not something that they "have" to do right away...they all get it eventually  :)

With ds#2 he has had bottles 2x in his life- he is bf & as soon as he was about 4mo, I started him with ebm in a sippy & now (8mo) he takes about 4oz... I am swapping one bf for a sippy as he won't bf when we are out. I found with both my boys the Tommy Tippee ones with a pop up spout (no valve) worked best for us & straw cups are great too.

Hi

I started giving my daughter a sippy cup at about 7 months. I didn't stress over it and by 12 months she was off the bottle. I offered it to her with her solid food every day. Some days she would play with it other days she would ignore it. I didn't like the straw type because she would tip them up because that's what she did with the bottle. The spout one was better for her because of the tipping motion.

Good luck and be patient. Eventually they all get it!! ;D

i've wondered about this myself.

i've introduced the nuby and avent sippy cup to andrew.

with the avent cup he can't get anything out of it at all unless i take the valve out and then he waves the cup around gets water everyhwere.

with the nuby cup he can drink out of it, but only if i tip it upwards for him.  he basically wants to take it the same was a bottle, laying down.  to me that's just the same as having a bottle.  so i'm all confused.

i've only been putting water in the sippy cup, should i be putting his formula in it?
