How much should a 10 month old be eating?
« on: February 07, 2006, 04:52:38 am »
Hi.  I'm not sure if this should be posted on the breastfeeding post or here, but I'll try here.  My daughter just turned 10 months old.  I think that she eats a lot of solids, and I'm wondering if that's making her BF less and if that's bad for her.  She'll eat two big bowls of rice with veggies and sometimes chicken for breakfast and lunch, and can eat two jars of fruit with rice cereal for dinner or breakfast (amounting to two big bowls).  I don't usually feed her because she tends to be distracted when I feed her.  When I do feed her she'll eat a bunch if a give her little pieces of what I'm eating, but not much out of her bowl.  My husband, babysitter, etc. get her to eat a lot by playing with her.  I'm worried that she's going to develop habits of eating even when not hungry.  She now only breastfeeds for very short intervals (this has been going on for 2 months) and will only feed a lot at night.  She wakes up twice a night to nurse which I let her do because I'm worried she's not getting enough breastmilk.  She also has at least 3 big poops per day, which makes me think that she doesn't need to eat that much, but what do I know?  I've read that they still get most of their nutrition from milk at this point.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Marica's mom

At 10 mo, she should still be getting quite a bit of nutrition from breastmilk. It's hard to say whether or not she's eating too many solids because babies' appetites vary so much. A few things jumped out at me...

If you're concerned about her breastmilk intake, there are definitely ways to get her to nurse better during the day. First step is to limit her solids. An "average" 10 mo old will eat about 1.5-2.5 cups of food. Limit her solids, and nurse her before offering solids. I'd also try and get out of the habit of distracting her while eating. She may be continuing to eat after she's full and could be too distracted to tell you she's finished. Most babies at this age prefer finger food over spoon fed food, so you might try making her meals consist of more finger food to help get rid of the need for distraction. HTH!

Thanks so much for getting back to me.  She ends up nursing twice in the night, which I let her do because I'm worried about getting enough breastmilk.  Is that 1.5 - 2.5 cups per day or per meal?
Thanks, Debbie

1.5-2.5 cups per day. Remember that's just an average...some babies eat less than that, and some eat more. It looks like she's probably eating more, and that's okay. Just try cutting back a bit and see what happens.

Thanks a lot.  One more stupid question.  Is a cup of food like 2 baby food jars or 4 baby food jars?  I live in East Timor so everything is grams.  Not sure how to convert.
Thanks, Debbie
