7mos-- how much can/should DS be eating?
« on: February 07, 2006, 13:11:01 pm »
Hi!
I BF my son and also feed him solids in the morning and evening.  He usually gets 2 1/2Tbsps Cereal and about 1Tbsp fruit or veggie at each of those sittings.  In addition we sometimes give him a graham cracker or a few veggie puffs.
Is this enough?  When should I start feeding him more?
The reason I ask is because he always seems like he could eat more & will if we offer it to him.

TIA!

Does he sleep through the night?  If so, he's probably getting enough.

Also, I've been told and have read that you can't really overfeed a baby.  If he will eat more, give him a little bit more.

At his age, it's important that breastmilk continue to be his main source of nutrition for several more months. With that in mind, it IS possible to overfeed solids. Keep an eye on his nursing habits to get an idea of how much is too much. He should be nursing at least 3-4 times per day. If he starts losing interest in nursing or he decreases the amount of time he spends at the breast, that's a cue that you might need to cut back on solids a bit. Also, if he starts showing signs of constipation, that can also be a sign that he isn't getting enough liquids. If it seems like he could eat more, you could try giving him a bit more if you'd like and see how he does. HTH!

Melissa, good points. Thanks for the addition/correction!   :)
