Bfing saves lives!
« on: February 08, 2006, 14:21:20 pm »
'If every baby were exclusively breastfed from birth for 6 months, an estimated 1.5 million lives would be saved each year. Not just saved but enhanced, because breastmilk is the perfect food for a baby's first six months of life - no manufactured product can equal it.'

Wow! I just stumbled across this quotation on UNICEFs website and thought I would share it with you all, I'm proud to be giving my ds a great start in life with my milk but devastated that so many woman don't get the support they need to do the same. 1.5 million lives - thats increadable and also heartbreaking.

Keep up the good work bfing mummys!!! ;D

what an amazing fact!

doesn't it suck that there are companies in the world (Nestle!!!!) who hide that fact from mums in the developing world in an attempt to sell more formula?  they give it out free but these mums often can't read the ENGLISH instructions and just mix it up in whatever quantity they can afford with whatever water they can find  :'(

it is rotten that our bfing rates are so low in places like the UK but at least we have the resources to ensure our formula is nutricious.

(incidently people have been boycotting nestle products over this for at least 20 years)

Yes people have been boycotting nestle and I am one of them. I have a card at home listing all thier products. I'll scan it if anyones interested. I'll get it out when I am at home (at mums at the min)

Well done to all us breast feeders!

Love it!

Nome, I would be interested in seeing that list.  I am not surprised that they do it though.

This link takes you to a UK website about an anti Nestle campaign.

There is a more up to date list on the site, mine was correct as of Feb 2005.  Nestle aggressively markets its baby food around the world which is breaking a WHO code of marketing, Artificially fed infants are more likely to suffer illness than breastfed infants and in poor conditions in 3rd world contires this invariably can lead to death. The people that boycott nestle are doing so until they market their baby food ethically

I agree with boycotting Nestle for being such formula pushers.  I do have a question, what cereal are you guys giving your lo's?  I have run into the problem that Gerber products have a TON of sugar and here in Venezuela we only have Nestle and Gerber to choose from!!  >:( >:(

I started my LO on porridge at about 7months, would some own brand of this be available where you are? Or maybe weetabix/redy brek? Sorry if this is no help  :)

I'd agree, Sophie is currently on Ready Brek which is finely milled oats without sugar or salt. When she has finished the packet (which may be sometime at 3 spoonfuls a day) she will have 'proper' porridge.
