7 months, hates the spoon
« on: February 09, 2006, 18:37:59 pm »
Freddie is 7 months old and on duel fuel (bottle and breast). He likes the idea of food, but is only interested if he can feed himself. He clamps up when I try and feed him with a spoon, but will suck green beans and croissants to death. What can I do? He is by no means wasting away as he's a stocky baby, but I am stuck for ideas on how to get nutritious food into my stubborn son. What can I feed him with his fingers and can I ever get him to like spoons...

Tyler went through a spoon refusal from 9-12 mo and we still maintained a pretty nutritious diet of just finger food. We did lots of cut up ripe or cooked fruit, steamed veggie chunks, tofu chunks, etc. If the food was too slippery for him to pick up, I coated it in dry baby cereal or crushed cheerios. For foods that you have to cook, I found it was waaaaay easier to make a batch, spread them out on a cookie sheet, freeze them, and transfer them into freezer bags. At 7 mo, good things to try are just about any non-citrus fruit (bananas are often a favorite), avocados (incredibly nutritious), cut up green beans, sweet potato chunks, squash chunks, squished peas, and of course, cheerios.

He WILL go back on the spoon eventually, I think the trick is to be patient and not force the issue. I'd offer Tyler something from the spoon about once a week. If he refused or got mad, I just calmly put it away and tried again next week. One day, out of nowhere, he started eating from it again. You can also try giving him his own spoon to play with while you feed him, that might help satisfy his newfound need for independence. Good luck!

My DS has just about gotten over the spoon refusal stage. I gave him small pieces of banana, toast, cheerios, sausages, chicken. He loves dried fruit so I gave him apricot and prunes you can cook veggies and cut them into bite size pieces or use peas, sweetcorn. Don't be too worried as it will only be a phase and I'll second Melissa's recommendation of hiving him a spoon to play whilst he eats. HTH

Sorry to be naive. Can a 7 month old eat cheerios as they are, or do they have to be soggy first? Not used to cheerios in the uk, the're a bit new and unfamiliar,

Your not naive!

I gave them to my DS at about 7months, it was a bit scary I was afaid he might choke but he was fine, now he scoffs them down eaisly I think he found them a bit fiddily to pick up at first. If your too worried just try some toast or bread.  :)

Believe it or not, cheerios are one of the easiest finger foods to eat. Put one in your mouth and don't chew it, and you'll see how quickly it dissolves. I was paranoid when Tyler first started them, so I'd dissolve them a bit in water or my mouth first until he got used to them.

Dear JacobMarks' Mum and Tyler's Mum
Thanks for the advice! Off to get Cheerios today. Very exciting as they were novelty food when I was little and haven't had them in years! Hope he likes them. Thanks for your help,
Freddie's Mum :)
p.s. very cute babies by the way!
