Peas
« on: February 10, 2006, 22:45:27 pm »
I tried doing up my own peas for ds today.  Now, wehn it came to blending I couldn't turn on the blender right away so the peas weren't hot so they may not have blended as well as thye should have.  This is my question....  do peas always have that little bit of gritty taste to them when you make them at home?  Ds sure didn't like the texture and gagged a bit, but I'm sure that's to be expected wtih all new sensations.

Thanks

alecks doesn't/didn't like the texture of homemade peas either -she would gag and then flat out refuse them.  i would mix it up with different foods like sweet potatoes, or carrots or something and it would be a little bit better.  it's just been this week that she actually started eating them on their own.

Hi Jodie!

I also found that when I mixed peas up for my DS the texture would be quite grainy and also occasionaly found the odd husk in there. I started mixing it up with cream instead of the water I had steamed them in, it seemed to help a little and DS seemed to enjoy eating them rather than eating them cos I was making him. HTH

Thanks for the info.  I had gotten in a heated debate with my mom.  She said there was no way that they should be grainy....  they should be smooth like everything else.  Tonight I mixed it with some rice cereal and he gobbled it up.  (by gobbled I mean ate more than 5 bites!  lol)

I think it is because of the skins. I read you are supposted to use a sieve (?) so that those don't get through but I don't. Tell you mom to smash up a pea with her hands, ask her if she can make that skin mixed into the rest of it..... ::)

The skin isn't digestible I don't think so I think you will be seeing it again!!! ;)

My goodness your lo sounds just like mine today.  I tried the peas I so painstakenly made for him and for the first time he gagged and cried.  My angel baby actually found a food he didn't like!  I guess I'll just try mixing them with something so they don't go to waste.  I used a food processor and couldn't get them any smoother.  I tried the seive and couldn't get them any smoother.  I guess we'll just wait until he's a little older and try again...

Ya, peas are by far his least favourite.  I can't even trick him into eating them....  but I try every few days just in case.  I'll stick with the safe veggies for now.

My 6 month old absolutely LOVES peas mixed with carrotts and swede.  It seems like she's in a minority here, but it's one of her favourites!  I just cook up some frozen peas, puree them with a little water and then freeze in ice cube trays.  I don't think they're particularly grainy though... did you use frozen or fresh?  I'm wondering if that makes a difference.  I think Ella likes them because they have a sweet taste.  Perhaps try petit pois peas instead?  They're even sweeter. x

My DS also loves peas, I use frozen ones and steam them & blend them in a little water and freeze them. I haven't found them grainy.
