How to add cereal to bottles
« on: February 13, 2006, 21:49:02 pm »
Hi -

My 8.5 month old dd is no longer sleeping through the night and I know the problem is she is not getting enough calories.  She does not like solids and will not do finger foods either.  We are going to a specialist this Thursday to determine why she won't eat.  Anyway, I need to increase her calorie intake so I was thinking adding cereal to one or more of her bottles.  How do you do that (i.e ratio of cereal to formula) and do I need to alter the nipples on her bottles?  She is on the fastest flow Dr. Brown's nipples.  Also does it have to be rice cereal or is another kind of cereal ok?

Sorry for the dense questions!  :-[  Thanks!

You can certainly try; I added cereal to bottles when my little one was refluxing. I used a Y-cut Playtex teat as the milk became so thick. Any kind of cereal will do; barley and oatmeal do not cause as much constipation as rice. I suggest one scoop of cereal per ounce of fluid.

We also added cereal to bottles before we started solids, for reflux. You will most likely need to alter the nipple - but be careful about how much. If it flows too quickly she could have trouble and choke, or if it's too small it will get stopped up. I would suggest buying a bunch of extra nipples and altering them differently so that you can test them.

Hello and welcome back. Once again here we are for helping you and Lucy. Ximena has been on cereal since 2 months cause of reflux. She is still having some at her night milk. She drinks 7.5 oz. with a # 3 nipple (Dr. Brown) adding 2 or 2.5 scoops to all her bottle. She likes Rice and Oatmeal cereal from Gerber. They say that oatmeal is heavier for them at night so it will last more time in their stomach. So sorry you are still having problems with Lucy. I am really sure that they will help you understand what Lucy is trying to tell you. Good luck and please post your experience on Thursday.... only 1 more day to go!

Thanks everyone for your replies!  :D  Lucy slept through last night so maybe I will not need to add cereal.  Hopefully it was not just a fluke!

She likes oatmeal cereal and she is using the number 3 Dr. Brown's nipples so I will go ahead with the cereal if I have to.  Of course, the day before we are to go to the specialist she ate her breakfast quite well.  I was utterly shocked.  I will keep the appointment though as I am sure they will be able to give me some good information.

Daniela - The weather was nice in Vegas but it definitely was not a good place for a baby!  She had trouble with the time difference so she was quite fussy.  It was neat to see the various hotels and casinos but I think we really would have enjoyed the gourmet restaurants and the shows.  But we could not do those things because of the baby so it was not as fun.  But it was nice to get away for a bit.  Thanks for asking!

Thanks again everyone!
