When to use a faster nipple?
« on: February 14, 2006, 04:10:51 am »
I have been mostly breastfeeding, but have started introducing a bottle in the evening to try and help my LO get enough and hopefully sleep better at night. I have both Avent and Playtex nipples and as I don't use them much they are in good condition, but I am wondering how to know when to use a faster flow (right now I am using the SLOW and 1 sizes).

Thanks

Hi Christa  :)

I always went to a faster nipple when the time it took to feed them took longer or when they started to get bored/frustrated.   :)

I would also like to know more about this because ds is taking longer to feed and wasn't sure if I should move up in nipples.  He is soy formula fed and uses an Avent 2 flow, which is for 1+ months and he is 4.5 months.

I used a Avent fast flow teat (no 4) when my DD was 4 months, as she was a quick eater (10mins) and she was getting bored with the flow.

ok, I think I will move up one size and see what happens... if too fast I can always just keep them for later. I think he should be fine as he's over 4 months and I'm still using the nipples that came with the newborn starter kit! I just don't want it to get too "easy" for him as I still want to breastfeed for a while.

When you first switch, it may take a little getting used to...some dribbling down the sides or gagging/choking.  Though if it continues through the entire feed, I would wait and try again in a week or so.  :)
