DVDs - Reccomendations Please!!!!
« on: February 14, 2006, 09:24:11 am »
Right - I have decided to bite the bullet! Up until now I've had no DVDs or Videos for the kids at all (I know, my family think I'm mad!). Haven't really felt the need for it as they hardly watch any tv and we have CBeebies. However, I'm beginning to think of getting some because:

1. Ella is now 3.5 and would really love to get to know some 'classics'
2. Some of the new CBeebies shows I think are rubbish!
3. She's stopped napping, so needs a quiet time and they would do the trick to allow me to get on with other stuff

So - SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!!!!! What do your kids absolutely love?
So far I'm thinking amination rather than films (although my neice was addicted to Harry Potter at Ella's age?!), so definites at the moment are Jungle Book and Charlie and Lola (WHY don't they put that on more often?)

Please let me know!!

PS - is it just me or does anyone else think the new Bedtime Hour line up on CBeebies is absolute pants??????? And why don't they give us any warning so we can manage expectations!

yes i agree, , bbc has lost us to playhouse disney i'm afraid!!!

My 2yo godson loves Madagascar, its great cos of the animals and works on so many levels so you can enjoy it too (well maybe not atfer to hundreth time of watching!!).
Anything with animals grabs his attention, so he watched the lion king avidly this weekend and also watches animal planet channel.

Looking forward to seeing the other suggestions

These are some of my son's favorite shows to watch: Bob the Builder, Jay Jay the Jet Plane, (He is facinated with trucks and planes  :) ) and any of the Baby Einstein videos. The Baby Einstein music videos might be good for a winddown in place of nap. Although, your daughter might be a little old for them. My son is two and if he is having and really rough day, they help to calm him back down.

I think the Maisy and Kipper DVDs are good. We also like Little Red Tractor

Plus Justin from cbeebies has a nursery rhymes DVD which is quite good especially if you feel there isn't enough Justin in your life! You can only buy it direct from the manufacturer

I like DVD that is a series of shorts better than a long movie for John.  It makes it easier to just put it in for a 20 minutes rather than arguing about turning it off.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (completely non violent and sweet)
Here Come the ABC's (a set of music videos by They Might Be Giants geared toward kids. John's favorite!!)
Disney's Classic Mickey Mouse Collection (black and white cartoons)
Fantasia & Fantasia 2000
Finding Nemo
Toy Story 1 & 2
Veggie Tales

I use our DVR to record Bob the Builder, Thomas, Charlie and Lola, and Oswald.  I don't have to buy the DVD's that way.

My dd has only one favourite dvd that she "borrowed" from the bookcase one day.
Disney's "Homeward Bound"
She saw the dogs and cat on the cover and that was that. (She has a fascination with dogs and cats - we have a cat and my mum has 2 dogs & 2 cats)
She is wayyyyy to young to watch it all the way through but she will sit and watch parts of it and then off she goes when she's had enough.
Luckily it's one of my favourite films  :-[ :P
