Unsettled sleep or wide awake from 0430 onwards every morning
« on: February 14, 2006, 09:27:48 am »
My 4 1/2 month old little boy Calum (Angel) has been on EASY since day one. He progressed to 4 hr easy when he was 3 1/2 months.

The ongoing problem we are having is that he has unsettled sleep or is wide awake from 0430 onwards every morning, when he is just unsettled (like last night) he was moaning at 1am, 4am then 5am the later 2 I left him and he fell asleep, the 1am he increasing got more agitate after 5mins? so I went and soothed him by running my hand down his body a few times (1am unsettledness is not usually an issue).   Incidentally between 4 - 5am used to be his old time for wake up if he was needing a feed, after getting rid of the 2am feed.

He currently weighs 16lb 3oz, 69cm long and eats between 30 - 34oz of formula in core hours between 4 bottles. He also gets formula in his "solid food", he was been on solid food for 4 weeks, I would have been the early wakings down to this but he was doing it before this started - I was advised by my HV to get him started on solids.  He only gets one meal a day of 2 ice cubes, fruit or veggies.

A couple of weeks ago he slept through the whole week, this was directly after 2 weeks of waking every 20mins to 2 hours (teething).  He then stopped sleeping through when he found his voice.

I don't know if he is still walking at 430 ish for a feed? his last night feed was last week, it took me 20mins to give him 1oz, so I assumed from there he wasn't hungry after all, although I still make up his n/f bottle (superstitious I think  ::) ).

I have recently stopped fully swaddling him in a blanket I now put in a gro'bag and swaddle his arms (he was getting out of a tight swaddle to easy. I get him to sleep by putting him in his cot awake, sometimes need to shush pat him others times he can be left - I used to walk him to sleep but DH and I stopped that a couple of months ago and he has been good at getting himself to sleep since. He is always in his cot for naps, unless we are out and about.

Our routine when he slept through the night was:

Up @ 7am
E 0730   8oz
A0815
S0900 (1hr 30min)
A1030
E1200   8oz
A1235
S1230 (2hr)
A1430
             E 1500 parsnip + Potato with 1oz formula
A1515
E1600   8oz
A1645
S1745  (50min catnap)
A1835 - inc bath
E2000  10oz
S2030 awake in cot

no d/f tried it when we got home from hospital, however I am usually in bed at 1000pm so I was having to set my alarm to wake up again, DH works shift and either works over this period or is in bed.

Our routine yesterday was:
Up @ 7.30am
E 0745   8oz
A0830
S0930 - 1100 (1hr 30min)
A1100
E1215   9oz
A1245
S1320 -1440 (1hr 20min)
A1440
             E 1500 peas + Potato with 1oz formula
A1515
E1615   8oz
A1630
S1700  (1hr 30 min catnap!)
A1830 - inc bath
E2000 2100!!   8oz
S2100 awake in cot, 10 mins to go to sleep on his own.
0100 had to resettle
0400 moaning , left him to resettle
0500 (same as 0400)
woke himself at 0710

should also say that the times he is wide awake at 0430 - 0500 I have to bring him in with me to get back to sleep as he just wants to play, this doesn't happen everynight.

Thank you so much in advance, any advice would be welcome!!

i don't have much advice. sorry. just that we also had that for a while, and he stopped. now he sleeps til a little after 6. i think they just go through all these short stages, and often sort themselves out on their own. they are growing so fast, they change almost from day to day.  it's hard to get through, though. I hope someone gives you more practical advice, but imo, it doesn't necessarily mean there is something wrong with your day. just that the little guy decided it's morning before the sun did.
it could be he grew out of it because I never took him out of his room. i'd stay half asleep and keep trying to nurse him, or rub his head til he fell asleep, so those awake times were also about a half hour, like yours. maybe that taught him that it's really night time, and not play time.
hth, and hope you get enough sleep!
