It's disgusting!!
« on: February 14, 2006, 20:48:00 pm »
I just opened a container of Gerber's bananas (Stage 1) for the first time today. What the heck is in that thing? It's definitely not bananas, as I've never had bananas that smelled or tasted like that. I even opened a second container thinking the first one must have been bad, but the second one is just as bad. I ended up throwing the stuff away, and I will just make my own. Are the other brands (Beech Nut or others) any better?

For the most part I've been pretty OK with most of the processed baby food I've tried, except for green beans (way overcooked with a sour taste) and now these supposed bananas.

Just wanted to vent for a bit. Thanks.

Thanks for your post, ds will soon start fruits and veggies after doing well on rice cereal for weeks now.  I had been going back and forth between wanting to make food and wanting to just buy it.  I'll definitely make ours now.

LOL, I've opened many a jar and thought 'yuck, they think I am gonna feed that to my baby!? It smells like garbage!?' The funniest thing is that I only use a jar about once a week when we go out so most of them must be pretty vile!

It think there is citric acid or something in the bananas as a preservative, or to keep them from turning brown maybe.  I was startled by their taste, but ds loves them.  Now he won't eat real bananas...

there is a preservative in them, but i find the beechnut brand is tons better than the gerber, gerber just taste bad, period.  just mash a ripe one up with a little baby's milk, pr mix with pear too.

I make my own food for ds, and I much prefer it that way - seems that almost all of the jar/canned stuff has a ton of sugar and/or salt. Not to mention that it doesn't taste like the real thing! I hope that this way he will be more likely to eat fruits and veggies when he's older.

Hi, :)
The Heinz Brand bananas are really good.  I used to buy that and eat that for myself as I can't stand the texture of bananas but loved the babyfood ones.
