No more solids?!?!
« on: February 15, 2006, 22:50:22 pm »
I know there have been similar posts to this lately, but just wanted some input on our specific situation...  Are we just going thru a weird stage??

Dd has loved solids since I started giving them to her - she's liked all the baby foods & LOVED puffs, wagon wheels & cheerios.  The last few days though, she's hardly been eating any (she's bfing like normal).  She'll eat a couple bites of things she likes & that's it.  Other things, she seems to have decided she doesn't like, and won't eat any.  She's even decided she doesn't like the puffs!!  She makes a face when one goes in her mouth & has even started crying.

Anyone else's MB doing this?  Any ideas of what's going on?  I don't think she's sick (she's acting normal & sleeping fine) - a week ago she had a stomach bug & didn't want solids, but then started eating them again.  Now I don't know what the deal is....  I'm stumped.... and, I'm worried about her getting enough to eat - she's small already - what if she starts losing weight????

It could be teething related, or it could be a newfound realization of her independence.  My DD is around your LO's age and she's doing some seriously weird stuff when it comes to solids.  She was eating them fine, and liked the lumps and bumps.  Now, the slightest lump and she coughs and acts like she's choking.  She makes the most hysterical faces and has even cried a couple of times.  I truly don't know what the deal is either, and I'm just going with it.  If you are BF as normal, she is getting enough nutrition.  She may be going thru a phase where she is not especially hungry, and it is much better for her to be taking a normal amount of milk than solids.  I would give it a full week, and if she hasn't emerged from the funk, call her doc and bring her in for a weigh in just to make sure she's not losing any weight.  I have a feeling it's a phase around this time and she'll be back to normal.  Keep offering her solids at her normal times, but don't force it if she won't eat.  Just keep the routine going.

Thanks cwolff...

She's still not her normal self.  She's eaten a little oatmeal with prunes & some Gerber wagon wheels - everything else is refused.  She's also had some really fussy times - on Wednesday night, this morning & tonight.  I wish I knew if it was teething or what is going on!   :( :( :(

If this is teething, does anyone know how long the solids refusal might last?  Thanks for any other thoughts!

From what I remember, Tyler would refuse solids for several days when he was teething, and sometimes even longer if he was coming down with something. Have you tried meds at all? Sometimes a well-timed dose of Tylenol or Orajel helped Tyler eat a bit better. Also keep in mind how great they are regulating their appetites. She may just be going through a not so hungry phase. If it goes on more than a week or so, she starts waking at night from hunger, or she's clearly dropping weight, a call to the dr might not be a bad idea. In the meantime, try to wait it out and not worry too much!

Thanks Melissa.  :)

So, for an update...  I haven't noticed any teeth come thru yet, but she's still not her usual self.  She now will eat oatmeal mixed with fruit in the morning like usual, but no more than 1-2 bites of food the rest of the day (besides milk).  She will also eat a Gerber wagon wheel or two at night for a snack & some cheerios occasionally in the morning after millk, but no other finger foods - she now hates the puffs, & seems to gag on everything else I've tried.

I was going to start doing a 3rd meal of solids before all this happened & now I can't even get her to eat 2 meals.  She's still sleeping thru the night, but she's been more fussy/clingy than usual during the day.  Any ideas?  It's probably been 2 weeks now.  Should I call the pedi?  Just keep trying & figure it's a weird phase??   ???
