Done breastfeeding and getting back to normal
« on: February 16, 2006, 07:23:48 am »
I have a question that is more for me, I am finding no answers anywhere else so maybe someone here can help me. When my daughter was about 4 months old I was having trouble producing and decided to suppliment with formula wich went very well. She then gradually went to nursing just in the morning then (so sad) we stopped all together about a month ago.she is now 7 months old. So my question is this, I still have not menstrated yet, does anyone know how long it will take to get back on track. I know everyone is different but a general idea would be great. I have taken pregnancy tests and they are all negative, all three of them. ;)

this is SUCH a difficult question to answer because everyone's bodies react differently to pregnancy and bfing and also because there is a lot of variation in how we bf, how much rest we get, how many feeds per day our los need, how well we nourish our bodies through the experience etc!
i can tell you that MY period returned when i was still exclusively bfing my nearly 6 mo son.  you are right about pregnancy before your period shows up again.  i am certain other people will share their experiences with you too and will have more advice!

Maggie is absolutly right!

The average time for the return of your periods is 14.6 months, almost anything is considered normal when it comes to your periods while and after breastfeeding. Are you wanting to get pregnant again? I'd say leave thing about 3 or 4 more months and if your still worried that they havnt returned mention it to your health vistor/ GP. hth  :)

I was breastfeeding at least every 4 hours including at least once or twice at night when my period returned. Some people have to wait several months after stopping.  Ovulation sometimes kicks in when you regularly have intervals of more than 5 hours between breastfeeds. You could be fertile now but just not having periods. For other people their periods return for several cycles before they are actually 'fertile'. I agree with Jacob Marksmummy that you should give it another 3 months or so and then check with your doctor. I wouldn't worry though.

I agree that everyone is different. Some moms don't have their period back even though they are only nursing twice a day and some have it back at 4 months postpartum even though they cosleep and nurse on demand. It may take a while for you to regain your fertility, just watch out as you may get pregnant before you get your menstruation.

I just wanted to add my own experience b/c i had the same questions as kmetli!  My LO is 9.5mos and i am only BF 2 times a day and pumping once and my pd's haven't returned.  I have also done 2 pregnancy tests (not that i want to be pregnant, 1 spirited child is enough for me right now!)  ;D

Everyone is different i guess, not that my pd's were ever "normal" to begin with, and I am 35 years old  :'(

Just my 2 cents!
