reflux seems to be getting worse - help!
« on: February 16, 2006, 22:29:17 pm »
Hi all,

DD was diagnosed with reflux at 1 month and is now 4.5 months..been on heavy medication but reflux still quite severe - seems in pain during and after feeds, is sick all the time (often 3-4 times per feed, up to 2 hours after feed).  Hvae recently weaned her on the advice of a paediatrician to help alleviate this but all that has happened is she is taking less and less liquid (not sure if this is related to the weaning as she was fine for the 1st week).  I am giving her bottle first and she is only taking 2-4 ounces, then  I am trying to fill her up with porridge/custard which she loves.  Unfortunately this is still not enough as she is only going 2.5-3.5 hours between feeds and waking in the night wihch she never used to do.  It just seems to be getting worse! She has always been a good sleeper but recently naps are disintegrating, as is EASY routine as she is hungry/in pain a lot of the time.  It's such a shame as LO is a happy little spirited/textbook thing who is having such a horrible time.  :'( Any advice???? Cereal in bottles (but clogging up bottle is last thing I want to do as she will then hate feeding even more)?? ???

Sounds to me like the meds are not doing the trick. If she's still not eating well and in pain then you definitely need to get back to the dr. It took some persistence from me to get things straightened out with my refluxer, but that's what we do as moms right? The solids won't keep her full since there's not many calories there. Putting cereal in the bottles might help her keep it down a bit better, but it doesn't sound to me like that would solve the problem. I think you need to revisit the meds.

Hi. Sorry your LO's reflux is so bad. Reflux is such a rollercoaster.
Would you mind telling us what your LO is taking and the dosing and schedule?
I agree that it doesn't sound like the meds are working? Have you asked for a referral to a GI Specialist?
Abigail's reflux seem to peak at 4 months and nothing the ped did would help. I demanded a referral to a GI and he was so much more experienced in handling reflux. He got her on the right meds and she has been so much better with a few bumps in the road!

I didn't find that thickening her bottles seemed to help but it is worth a try. They have cereal nipples you can buy for most bottles and you start with 1 tsp rice ceral to 2-3oz of formula/breastmilk and add thickening as needed.

Unfortunately no doctor seems to take us seriously.  I had a total of five GP visits, three hsopital stays and one episode where I sat in Accident and Emergency and refused to budge until i saw a paediatrician  - and then we were finally given Domperidone and Ranitidine and told there was nothing else.  (we tried infant gaviscon but it didnt make any difference-just clogged up the bottles).  This is the medication she is still on but it is clearly not working.  :'(

As your dd's weight increases the amount of medication she is taking may need to be increased too, if it hasn't been increased since it was initially prescribed at 1 month then you may need to look into that.
