I actually just went to an allergy specialist for DS (he has milk allergies) and he told me to avoid peanut butter until Carter was old enough to spell it!!!!   :o  I am sure that he is exaggerating a bit but I am definitely going to wait until he is closer to 2.  I would be interested to hear what others have done!!

my lo is 18 months and i havent done peanut butter yet.. but i could-- with my first dd i gave it to her right about this time-- one other thing with peanut butter(other than allergies) is the choking.. when you do decide to give peanutbutter make sure that the pieces are small enough that they dont ball up in thier throat--my second dd is famous for shoving a bunch of food into her mouth without swallowing.. so i am a little leary about giving her a peanut butter sandwich.

Speaking from a mother who has a ds with a peanut allergy I suggest waiting. They aren't missing anything and it may just be those extra few months that do the trick. JMO.

I started peanut butter with Tyler at 1 yr. We have no history of allergies or sensitivities in the family, and most of the guidelines I'd seen said it was okay to start. If you do try it, Jayne made a great point about choking. I used to scoop out bit and mix it with milk or juice to thin it out before spreading, and I'm still really careful about how many pieces of sandwich or PB and crackers I put in front of him at one time.

Dd has has some digestive issues that our ped say may make her more prone to food allergies, and he said to wait until at least 18mos on all high-allergen foods, including peanut butter.  And since I'm still nursing, that means no peanut butter for me.  I've not had a peanut butter cup in over a year!

Whats a peanut butter cup  :) ??
Well i have hayfever and so does my dad - not sure if that makes DS 'at risk' from peanut butter - prehaps i should just wait.  The book im reading just says how healthy and nutrious it is for kids so i wanted to introduce it.
Thanks for your input everyone!

Hi ladies,

My dh's oldest son (previous marriage) has a severe nut allergy so we will be waiting a while before introducing to ds. However, I suspect he will be OK (or better than his brother anyway) as I ate peanut butter a couple of months back and then went straight to ds and gave him a big smooch, probably with p/butter traces still on my mouth (I know, I didn't think!). Anyway, if it were his brother, he'd be going into anaphylactic shock within minutes, but Tyson didn't even get a spot on his cheek where I kissed him. So I think we'll be OK, but I still won't be introducing until about 18 months I think.

And a question - does anyone know what it is about p/butter these days? When I was a kid (millions of years ago), p/butter allergy was never heard of and EVERYONE had p/butter sandwiches. I grew up in the US and I remember everyone getting p/butter and jelly sambos from the cafeteria....Why do we have this epidemic of nut allergies now?

My eldest son has a severe peanut allergy.  We gave it to him at 18 months and he reacted immediately.  My youngest will not be having peanuts until he's at least 3.

There is a lot of debate on when to give peanuts to your babies, depending on where in the world you live.  I Canada, I know some of the information we are given says to wait at least a year but if either parent or immediate family member has food based allergies to wait until 3 or 4 yrs.  Other places are more lax.  It's one of those things you have to do your research and then go with your gut instinct.

One thing I have heard about peanut butter, is that you should try to buy natural peanut butter as opposed to commercial stuff as the brand name pb has a LOT of sugar in it.  Something little children really don't need is more sugar.  And to try other nut butters first, the allergies to almonds and cashews seem to be less severe but if they react to those then you can be pretty certain that they are allergic to peanuts as well.

My questions is what do people of Thai nationalities do regarding peanuts?  Peanuts or peanut oil is in almost all of the food there?

Cheers
Judy

MY SON HAD AN ALMOST DEADLY REACTION TO  NOT EVEN A 1/2 A TSP. OF P.B. WHEN HE WAS 1 1/2 YRS . OF AGE. FOR ME, MY DD WHO IS NOW 5 1/2 MO. WILL NOT EVEN TOUCH IT UNTIL SHE'S 3 YRS. OF AGE. BE CAREFUL, IT CAN CAUSE MANY PROBLEMS. :'(
