Waking up when rolling over
« on: February 21, 2006, 00:41:48 am »
I know this is pretty common.  I was just wondering what route to take with this.  My ds has just learned in the last few weeks to sleep on his stomach.  I thought we dodged this bullet because he is so old.  Nope!  He seems to wake himself up by getting on his knees when he wants to change position.  From there, he stands up and gets very upset, wanting to get back to sleep.  He had a cold last week at the same time all of this has been happening, so we were easy on him when he woke up.  I would go in and tell him it was "sleepy times" and lay him down.  If that didn't work, I would pick him up to calm him down, then lay him back down.  He fell back to sleep easy after that.  Now that he is feeling better, he still wakes up at least once at night.  When we go in, he is standing up in his crib.  Most nights, we just lay him down and he goes right back to sleep (how nice for HIM).  Last night, I was slow going to him and he quieted down before I went to him.  Then, 30 minutes later, he did the same thing and I had to do in a lay him down.

I know this is just a phase, but I was wondering how to "help" it along.  Should we NOT go to him when he wakes up?  Isn't that CIO?  Should I just lay him down or stay with him until he sits down himself?  I'm not sure as to what to do.  I feel like we are accidental parenting by going to him...but he sounds so sad!  I'm a big softy, I guess.  Except, when it starts to become a habit and cuts into my sleep.  I love my ds, but, I love my sleep a tinny bit more.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Jill

Hi Jill

I would personally (in fact DID) do exactly what you are doing.  You are right this is just a phase and DS will stop waking once he gets used to that extra mobility.

Good luck
Jo
