What to feed a 5 month old?
« on: February 21, 2006, 04:13:32 am »
I am just curious what other mommies out there were feeding their LO at 5 months.  So far we have tried

Rice Cereal
baby Oatmeal

Squash
carrots
peas
green beans (didn't like)
wax beans (didn't like)
sweet potatos

pears
peaches
bananas and I have some applesauce to try soon too

I know that at 6 months there is a whole new variety of things to try but Is there anything else that I could be giving her right now?

Thanks,
Steph

You could try avocados, they're actually one of the most nutritious foods around. You could also do apricots, nectarines, plums, or prunes for now. For cereals, you can try barley cereal or mixed grain (once you've done barley).

Courgette is a nice one to try, great mixed with a bit of baby cereal; Parsnip was one of my little one's favourites as was broccoli mixed with carrot.
As for fruit; Papaya is great an very easy to prepare.

Wow- are these all foods that I can prepare at home cause I haven't seen anything like that in the stores?  How can I prepare my own food?

Yes, these are all home prepare foods. I tend not to buy jars since I feel there is something weird about vegetables that last for 4 years. Home preparation is so easy; you just steam  the veg that you are cooking and then mouli it up with a bit of formula or even water an then chuck the portions in the freezer.

StephC, there is a GREAT topic in the Eat section too about baby food recipes. Check it out - there are also some good referrals for baby food books. I make lo's baby food myself and I really prefer it - it's easy, inexpensive, and I know exactly what's in it. Plus you can vary the diet as much or as little as you like.

My LO has tried;

Rice Cereal with various fruits
baby Porridge with various fruits
rusk

Brocoli
Leek
carrots
peas
sweet potato
potatos
red pepper (LO loved, they didn't love him!!)
parsnip
courgette

chicken
bolognese with beef mince, garlic and oregano
turkey
Cod

pears
apples
bananas & cinnamon
mango
apricot

petite filous

I tend to blend, freeze them in ice cube trays, put into bags and at the start of the day give him an assortment of veggies for lunch and fruits for later. I have the Annable Karmel baby and toddler meal planner that is great for inspiration.

Wow- your baby is lucky! Such variety!  I guess you can do that when you make your own food!
Thanks for the help, I think I will try and find a recipe book cause I would have no idea even where to start.

Did you LO take well to the meat?  I was advised not to give her meat until something like 7 months old but so far I have started everything early.

 :) Steph

StephC,
I made spagettie Bologna's for DH and I recently and in another put made one for Calm without salt, also did the same for soup I made recently, one for Calm without Salt or stockcube made with veggies he was used to.

I am from the UK and we have Heinz 'mums own' jars, I received a free chicken in a recent baby pack I received from my health visitor. They also so turkey and cod, etc.  These are the only jars I use and they taste very like chicken, turkey and cod. I mix with my own veggies. So much so, my Dh had to give Calum the cod as I hate fish - needless to say CAlum was stinking of fish all day after it, gross!!

Not sure if you have these in Calgary?

This was the book I chose after doing research and it was later also recommended to me from a friend.
