Not interested in solids
« on: February 22, 2006, 05:59:47 am »
Hi- I am new to this website but I have already found it extremely helpful... I am having problems with my son and his sleep (or lack thereof) and many have told me to get him on solids to help him stay fuller longer.  I know that Tracy says this is just a myth and a full tummy is the same whether with milk or solids but at just 6 mos., I would like my little guy to show more interest.  I have started him 2.5 weeks ago on rice cereal which he totally turned up his nose at.  Then it was onto Barley last week with the same reaction.  He makes the cutest little face but I think he is smart and know Mama's milk is best... He does show interest in our eating though.  This evening I tried him on butternut squash and got the same reaction.  He doesn't like the spoon ( I use the rubber coated ones) and has almost been exclusively breast fed so I wonder if this contributes to it.  He will suck food off my finger but it usually comes right back out.  I try to make it exciting and a happy experience - but he acts like the whole thing is totally unnecessary- Any ideas? will I be bf'ing until he is 20?!!

The best piece of advice I can give you is to keep trying and be patient. I remember posting the EXACT same thing when Tyler started solids once upon a time. He turned his nose up at everything for about 1 month, then suddenly one day, he just got it. It was like a light bulb went off, and he finally opened his mouth. He was a little over 7 mo then, and I really thought I'd just have to nurse him forever. So your little man will come around when he's ready!

Also, keep in mind that it can take many exposures (like 10-15 or more) to new food before a baby will even THINK about opening up. Some just take more time than others!

Don't stress yet.  Breastmilk is still the perfect food for your baby, so try not to worry too much! You may find these links reasuring.

Your baby will eat when he's ready.  My 10-1/2 month old son only just starting tasting solids, and I can't really say that he's "eating."  But he'll eat eventually, and yours will too.

Hi again-
Thanks for the advice and encouragement.  Tyler'smommy, what you described is exactly what a friend of mine with a 7  mos old just told me- she said after a month of trying, it just "clicked" for her little guy.  I hope the same will happen soon with mine.  I am well-versed on the wonderful effects of BM, as I have studied to become a lactation consultant.  While I plan on continuing to BF, I thought solids would give Dad a way to participate and I have heard that they really do help 'em sleep longer (I know Tracy says that's just a myth..).  So, I will keep trying -- thanks again for your help!-Joy

Just to add (sorry if you akready know), although they are called solids, 1st babyrice tries and purees should still drip of the spoon like a thicker formula.

DD also hated solids to start and I thought she'd NEVER eat real food! Things got better after about a month or 2 of trying, and by 11 months she was doing great. Just keep doing what you're doing and don't stress it.  I found that when I started caring less about how much she ate, she started eating more!  ::)
