flavoring formula
« on: February 24, 2006, 10:25:47 am »
Hi there,

My dd has been put on a special formula and it smells (and I admit tastes :P) yucky.  Any ideas about flavoring formulas?  I thought about adding some vanilla or something.  She's only 12 weeks old and we've had volume intake issues since day one (reflux).  Does she even have taste buds yet?  I'm covering the medical issues, etc.  but want to try anything I can to help her want to eat more.  Flavoring was just a thought.  I ran out of breast milk which was MUCH sweeter and she preferred that to the formula.  But, since she wouldn't eat, my supply dried up.  (Yes, I pumped for a few weeks but when your baby cries constantly, pumping time is precious sleep time as well.  :))Any thoughts out there on flavors that won't cause allergies or be somehow harmful to infants?

My dear friends DLS has hypoplastic left heart syndrome and had to be on a yucky (expensive) formula for a while.  The children's hospital suggested strawberry flavor.  The pharmacy could provide an expensive flavoring agent, but they suggested hershey's strawberry syrup as a great (and cheaper) substitute.  He needed extra calories, too, so the syrup helped.

How is she drinking it? i mean do you think she dislikes it or do you think she should dislike it cos you don't like it? She may be able to just tell the difference but just take a bit of getting used to it.

Hello.

I have problems with getting my nine month old to drink enough milk, i am very lucky if he gets close to the mimimum amount he needs a day and have often wondered about flavouring milk. I am from england and i dont think you can get hersheys syrup here (although the chocolate is lovely!!!) do you know if that is similar to nesquick syrup?

cheers
SARAH

Oh wow, I am no expert, but I don't think I would put strawberry or chocalate syrup in my child's milk.  My son is also on a special formula.

He was on Nutramigen (Hypoallerginc formula) since 6 weeks old and at 51/2 - 6 mos. old our new doctor switched him to Similac Alimetum, same hypoallergenic, just a differnt brand.

Well....  Our first experience with the Nutramigen was Awful, he hated it.  As you I breast feed and all he did was CRY and wanted to eat our of frustration all the time, I was so sleep deprived that I start giving formula, I think we tried everyone out there before that awful day that he cried for 24 hours straight.. I called the doctors crying my eyes out and they recommended this formula.  OH MY GOSH, It stunk SO BAD, how in the world could anyone drink it, I could not even stand to make his bottle..  He did not want anything to do it.. I was so scared that he was starving so I gave him his old formula.. Well crying still ALL NIGHT LONG :(  I tried the special formula again and within 1 day he was a NEW BABY.. My husband and I call it Miracle Powder in a bottle or Liquid Gold, becuase of how expensive it is.

At about age 4/5 mos. old he stopped wanting his bottles and would not drink but like 18 oz a day and he bagan to throw up all the time.  From just a couple weeks old, I thought he had reflux, but the doctors just told me I had the "new mommy symdrome".  So I switched doctors at 51/2 mos. old.  Right away she told me he deft. did have acid reflux and is now on medicine and said that most of her reflux patients are on the Similiac Alimentum.  For whatever reason they do better on it.
Well I thought the Nutramigen stunk, OMG this is 10 times worse, smells like a stinky mans arm pits, but HE LOVES IT.. We also are putting 3 teaspoons of rice in each bottle.

I just wanted to share my story with you, don't lose hope and you may want to try the Similiac name brand.  Oh... and just an idea about "flavouring" the formula, you could try a teaspoons or two of juice just to flavor it some... I ask my doctor about this when he was having trouble eating and she said it would fine to do that, just make your bottle as normal and added a little juice (be sure to dilute the juice though).

Please check with your doctor first before putting syrup or anything like that in his bottle, not a good idea, unless they say so...

Please let me know how things turn out and good luck!

Thanks for all the input.  :)  It's most likely just me that doesn't like the smell (or taste) of the formula.  I guess if she's hungry enough, she'll eat anything.  I was just worried because she's got reflux and was doing some serious hunger striking.  I just wanted to try EVERYTHING possible to help out.  We've been on the Alimentum, Nutramigen, and Rx Elecare.  Now, we are back on just the Alimentum.  We upped her meds, and now she's eating much better.  Besides, only a few more months and we can start the solids....

Thanks for the input.  If she strikes again, I may ask my GI specialist about the strawberry...
