gripe water ?'s
« on: February 24, 2006, 20:51:29 pm »
i have been using gripe water a couple weeks consistently for my 12 week old.  she has wind/gas issues.  the gripe water really seems to do the trick.  i use it after each feeding, and i use half the does recommended, b/c i don't think she needs as much as it says.  but i worry about using it so much.  i have tried a feeding her with out it, and she always is in a lot of pain for the next feeding, she won't eat as much, and also has a hard time napping because of the pain.

does anyone out there know if you can "over use" gripe water? or can you use it for too long?  or if there is a reason not to use it so much?

i would love any feed back on this.  thanks.

I found this in an article on the web:

"Gripe Water is an all-natural substance, so there is no need to worry about toxicity or over doing it. Every new mom can use something to help calm her baby, which is why Gripe Water is so popular in European cultures. Where bottles and rattles are common baby shower gifts and gifts that are given to new parents in America, Gripe Water is a common gift for new parents.

Gripe Water isn't nearly as common as it used to be, so the brands that you are able to find may vary from year to year. As more and more Americans learn about Gripe Water it seems to be making a slight comeback, though you can't walk into any store and find it. Usually baby specialty stores will carry it, or be able to tell you where you can likely find it in your area. If you can't seem to find it in your area at all, the Internet can help you get Gripe Water in your home to help you calm your baby.

Gripe Water is usually water that is fortified with herbs such as ginger, chamomile, or fennel. All of these herbs are known for calming the stomach, relieving gas, and just helping the body to relax. Many mothers feed their children herbal teas when they are not feeling well, but Gripe Water is easier because all the calming and soothing herbs are together in one place so that you don't have to choose which herb you'll use. Mothers have been finding Gripe Water helpful for a long time, so it must work well for a good number of babies suffering.

Many parents start using Gripe Water right after birth and continue to do so well into the toddler years. When babies suffer from gas and colic Gripe Water is often used to soothe the pain and allow both the parents and the baby get some much needed rest. As the baby begins to grow and suffers from teething, Gripe Water will again come in very handy. Many parents also swear that using Gripe Water during those sleepless nights helps to get baby to relax and finally close his or her eyes."

Sounds absolutely fine to me!
(I know the older brands in the UK had alcohol in them many moons ago. I doubt you have to worry about that anymore!)

On the back of my bottle it says no more than 6 times a day, but that is the full dose.  I know for us, we used to give a full dose in the morning, afternoon, and right before bed.  That seemed to help even out the gas.  All the ingredients are natural, so I don't think it can be overused.  The brand we use is Baby Bliss. You could try to look online to find any info.  hope that helps

My LO used to love gripe water! I gave him it right up umtil he was about 5months old, not that his wind was that terrible but it always seemed to settle his tummy how ever small the ache. I wouldnt worry about overuse  :)

Gripe water was the best thing that I ever discovered. My lo was colicky for the first four months and the only thing that would calm her down was gripe water. I also used it when she was teething. If I ever go to a baby shower I will definitely be giving this for a gift, as it is a life saver. It is very safe, and all natural so I never felt bad giving it. My lo would be crying for an hour and as soon as I would give her the gripe water within minutes she would be sleeping.
