New here: 6 wk old eating 1 1/2 - 2hrly
« on: February 25, 2006, 22:51:29 pm »
Hi I am new here.  I have a 6 week old and I have just started reading The Baby Whispher.  I am going to be starting out tomorrow as I just read the book today.  My question is I am going to be returning to work on Wednesday full time will this be a problem?  Also I think Ava is what they call a "snacker" she eats every 1 1/2 - 2 hrs and will only eat for a maxiium of 10 min when I do start the EASY should I not feed her when she wants to eat in 2 hrs, I should hold off as long as I can?  All I know is that I want her to get on some sort of routine b/c feeding her every 2hrs during the night is getting very old.  Also I am breastfeeding.  Thanks

Hi Careene
I have a couple of questions:
What are your plans for childcare and how do you plan on feeding your LO while you are at work? I think that could affect your routine quite a bit. If she is getting bottles it will change her feeding patterns so I wouldn't get too attached to any routine just yet. Will you be able to express/pump your milk? Is there a chance she could come and visit you at work for some nursing?
Some people have more success offering both breasts to ensure a fuller feed although some also manage fine on single-sided. At that age Sam was probably going about 2 hours and later that moved to 2.5. Then he started to feed less often at night but the day stayed the same. Breastmilk digests very quickly. You can't judge by bottlefeeding standards.
She is also at an age when big growth spurts are happening. She needs to feed a lot to build up your milk supply and this is very natural. It may not last for long.
Good Luck. You are starting back at work quite soon in my experience so make sure you get lots of support especially at night. Look after yourself and eat and drink well.

Just to add that at her age it is perfectly normal for her to be going for 2hours by LO did until about 14weeks. Get back to on the questions and we will try and help some more  :)

My parents or my husbands parents will be watching AVar in my home.  I have lunch from 12:30 -1:30 and plan on coming home and BF'ing her then.  While at work I will be pumping my milk, I won't be able to BF her at work.  Only pump!
I was originally doing both breasts she seems to only eat about 5-7 min on each side.  I am just worried that I am getting a "snacker".  Just yesterday afternoon I switched to only offering the one.
Last night I started somewhat of the schedule.  I did a dream feed at 10:20 and she slept till 2:30.  I fed her then, figuring she wasn't fully on the schedule just yet.  She then woke up at 5:30 again, I shhh/pat and she feel back asleep for only another 15 min then I fed her again.  Not sure if I should have really fed her at both those times but again today is my first day.
So far today she woke up at 7:00 I fed her, till 7:49 (it was a fight to make her eat more than 5 min, I think we had total of 20 min) had activity time, and now I just put her in for a nap.  I posted a few questions on another thread, if I was supposed to leave her after putting her down for a nap (she wasn't crying just staring at her mobile or bumpers)?  What activities does anyone suggest?
