how to teach bf baby to drink from bottle?
« on: March 01, 2006, 07:08:00 am »
ds is five months old, only bf, and i realized last week that i can't leave the house at night, as he often wakes to nurse in the evening. and it's not the same each night, so it's nothing i can plan around.
how do i teach him to take a bottle?!
he chews on it, then cries for me to nurse him. do i just keep trying at times when he's not too hungry?

i didn't think of this earlier - to give bottles once a week like they say. it only occured to me recently that i can and should get out of the house, so i  would like to be a little more free in the evenings.

Hiya again M&M's Ima

I had to give my DS top-up feeds from birth so he was used to taking a bottle, then I had to stop breast feeding only after a few weeks due to supply and hungry baby.

I think from reading TBW and watching TBW programs the trick is to find a teat that is roughly the same size and shape as your nipple, it may take a good few attempts to find the right one that suits your DS, but you will get there.  The other option you have is to try a sippy/straw cup rather then a bottle.

It means having an experiment with different teat and types of cups but it will be worth it in the end, especially if you can make plans to go out in the evening and someone else can feed your LO. ;)

Hope this helps

This is always tough!  When we first introduce a bottle dad give it to him at 4 wks.  He had no problem taking it.  Then we tried later on and there was no way he was taking it.  So we tried 4 different nipples and final he took it.  Dad always gave him the bottle but I had to be out of the room and he also couldn't see me for the last 1/2 hour because he would want bf.  Then around 2 mths my little boy always took a bottle at a evening feed.  Then at 4 mths he decide no more bottle and would fight it.  So we finally decide to go to bottles.  Now there were some tricks I had to do to get him to take it.

Try some of these:
1.  Walk while feeding them
2.  Put gripe water on the nipple
3. Nurse then pull them off and stick the bottle in their mouth
4. Get dad to feed them
5. Put your fingers/hand on their check

Good luck

hi, sorry haven't been responding much lately. thanks for checking up.

maybe it's just Israel, but from what i've seen, all the nipples seem pretty similar. ? makes me a bit cynical to start buying different brands, as there doesn't seem to be anything too varied.

left him at a babysitter yesterday. she fed him EBM from a spoon. gave him a bottle too, but just chewed on it.
?

i think i'm going to just have to keep trying. ?

working on dh getting him back down in the evening without nursing (when he wakes up often - less than four hours, we know he doesn't need to be fed.) that way i can at least leave him sleeping and not worry he'll wake up and be up til i come back.

and if it's the daytime, i guess he could be fed from a spoon....

at some point, ds1 started taking a bottle, but i think he was almost a year then.

I was thinking...

have you tried a sippy cup or something similar, if your LO is happy taking from a spoon this may be the answer  ???

for a five month old???

that may work, actually, cuz he loves taking drops of water from a regular cup.

i even saw some in the store that said 3-6 months.

hmm
thanks

Yes, I give CAlum a sippy to play with as he can hold his toys and bottles (with my help) if put some ounces of milk in the sippy and he was apple to drink it.

Try and get one that is leak proof, i.e when he tips it it won't leak every where.
