baby rice

Hello. Can anyone help me with a question about rice?

My LO is 6.5 months old. He has tried lots of different veggies and recently I have started to mix with baby rice or lentils. This sounds really silly but do I keep mixing with the powdered baby rice or can I start using him the real stuff!!

Hi Kshah.  Personally, I never used baby rice.  I bought some, mixed it up and was so disgusted by the look of it that I couldn't bear to give it to my little girl!  So I made my own baby rice... cook up some brown rice (organic if you can get it) for 40 minutes or until tender.  Then pop it in a blender, with some of baby's usual milk or water and puree it.  My dd has this each morning with fruit for her breakfast and loves it (she has had it since 22 weeks).  I decided I wouldn't feel right giving Ella something that I wouldn't eat myself and I certainly wouldn't eat shop-bought baby rice myself!!  Vicky.

My Health visitor advised me to start him on it then use it after that to 'beefup or thicken' any purees and had made that had a strong taste i.e brocolli until DS was used to it.

Not sure he would digest it if you gave it to him in grain form as we eat it at his age, it may come out the other end as it started, but you coul give the pp idea a try.

Try mixing veg with potato for another idea.

my biy is just over 6 months and he has normal rice, we mix it with veggies and chicken and blend it down a bit and he loves it! but yet he has been on solids from a very young age, as advised by doctor, so he is ready for foods before others sometimes. My theory is to just try stuff, if he isnt ready for it you will know one way or another so you just stop!

I have been giving Liam whole rice since his 3rd week of solids, he just liked mashed from the start, some of it does tend to come out the other end undigested as mentioned above... it all comes down the the maturity of their digestive system.

The reason to give baby rice is that it is iron enriched & up until about 8mo the digestive system doesn't really absorb much iron from meat & the amount in bf is not enough... ff I think it is ok, but as I bf, I never really look at it from ff perspective.
