9 Mo. old refuses to eat--and gags and vomits!
« on: March 02, 2006, 14:55:56 pm »
HELP!  I have a 9 mo. old DS who has been an excellent eater up to this point.  He would try anything, loved all fruits and veggies.  I tried introducing stage 3 foods to him, which are a bit chunkier--and he would make faces, shake his head no, and refuse to eat.  SO...I would throw away that jar and open a new food...and same thing.  I finally resorted back to stage 2 pureed foods so that he would eat and suddenly he won't eat anything!  He will gag and vomit on the first bite of anything besides oatmeal---and he won't even finish a little bit of oatmeal!

What should I do?

TIA.

We have recently had similar problems with DD who is nearly 11 months, although we'd got as far as lumpier food.  For about a week now she gags and has been sick a few times when given food that previously she has loved.  We have found that she is ok with creamier foods (except yoghurt funnily enough) but chicken in mushroom and cream and fish in cheese sauce go down well.  She is also fine with rice cakes and bread sticks and stewed fruit.  She has been teething recently, and has also probably had a virus (she's come out in a rash today).  It will be interesting to see what anyone else has to say, I'll keep my eye on any new posts.

Beth-

Have you tried finger foods yet? Tyler went through a similar stage at that age (we hadn't made it to chunky food yet) and wouldn't eat anything from a spoon. Turned out he was ready to start being a little independent guy and feed himself (even though he didn't know how just yet). He went straight from stage 2 purees to finger food. HTH!

I am not sure about it, but dd did the same thing and she was teething then things went back to normal. I do not know if that is the case though. Tried finger foods?

We have given him a few finger foods...but not many, as I just don't know what to give him??!!!  I try to give him tastes of what we have for supper but he makes faces at some of it  :P

What are some good finger foods??

By the way, he seems to be back to his old self and is eating again.  DH and I joke about his little "hunger strike."   I have tried to feel for teeth and don't see any...but I know they can sneak up on you!

Thanks for your help!!

My DD is having a hunger strike right now and all she will eat are cheerios and frozen blueberries. She is teething and I think I just need to roll with it. She will sometimes eat of chunk of banana, sometimes she will eat pasta with tomato sauce or purred veggies on it but otherwise she just won't eat from a spoon. I know it isn't affecting her much because she still sleeps through the night but it is hard not to worry that she isn't eating....

I would try shredded cheese, shredded fruits like apples or pears, frozen veggies, toast, or mini paris toasts, cut up spagetti with sauce (messy), frozen fruits.....and of course cheerios. I swear my daughter will only eat cheerios right now. I am worried that she isn't getting enough iron but she is getting some formula although she doesn't love her bottles either!

Hope this helps a bit.

Things got a bit better, but today has been difficult again.  Weetabix was ok for breakfast, but lunch was tough.  Tea time v. little savoury, held the food in her mouth for eveeeeeeeeeeeer, and then gagged.  Ate petit filous ok from spoon.  Had a rice cake.  When we ate which was cold chicken and chips and peas we cut up some and let her help herself.  Some got thrown on the floor but some made it into her mouth.  We are going to try her more with the food we are eating as long as it's suitable.  Will try some grated cheese and fruit and see how it goes.

Thanks for the advice.

How crazy that our LOs are getting picky!  I think you're right that it can have to do with teething, too.  Asher still won't eat anything soft and chunky.  He gags and vomits...but he's back to eating all things pureed and anything hard (fruit puffs, goldfish crackers..)

Thanks for all of the support!!
