when do you drop the dream feed?
« on: March 03, 2006, 02:09:59 am »
My son will soon be 6 months and he still receives the dream feed.  When should I stop giving him the dream feed?  Also, by six months should he only be receiving 4 bottles instead of 5?  One more question...when taking away the dream feed Tracy mentioned adding ounces to the earlier feeds, however my son already takes 8 oz in each bottle and finishes it all.  He is in the 97th% and doubled his weight at 4 months so he was always hungry and we had to start solids at 4 months.  Can anyone help.

Thanks,
Drews mom

well he does drink the whole dream feed...although lately when I try to feed him it he makes a weird face when i give it to him the he turns his head.  Its almost like it has weird taste or something.  but i am wondering if he just isn't hungry.  I currently give him solids in the morning and at dinner.  I/m wondering if i should just add solids at lunch and just take away the df.

I dropped the dream about a week ago. When 3 solids meals were firmly established.

Are you still giving your DS first milk, or follow on milk?

At 6 months with the dream feed he should be getting 5 bottles. Without the dream feed, four. Although every baby is different. Gradually cutting out the dream feed works for some, although it didn't for us. We went cold turkey around 7 months. We had a rough week, but she adapted after that. She started taking in more solids and her milk intake increased during the day. If you need advice on how to drop the dream feed, there is a post at the top of this forum labeled - how to stop the dream feed. HTH

Last night I tried giving him the Df again and he refused it.  So, I didn't give it to hom and he lasted the night.  I was giving him 5 bottles a day which included the df.  Yesterday though he only had four bottles and solids at breakfast and dinner.  So maybe he is getting enough.  So I am thinking about keeping his current schedule but eliminating the df and adding solids at lunch.  His current schedule is as follows:

7:00am E
7:30 am A
8:30am solids
9:00 S
11:00 E
11:30 A
12:00 solids
1:00 S
3:00 E
4:30 solids
5:00 A
5:30 cat nap
6:15 bath, etc
7:00 E

Any suggestions?  Also, I'm not sure what you mean by first milk and follow up milk.  Thanks

You schedule looks great, my DS is 5.5months and takes 4 feeds a day (7 - 8oz each + larger one before bed), has done since switching to EASY - we have never done a d/feed.

first milk and follow up milk - first milk is the formula given to your LO from birth, follow up milk is the formula especially designed for babies from 6months - hope this answers your question.

Think I have answered you before somewhere about how to add the extra ounces into your bottles during the day.

My DS will be 7 months in a few days, and I'm in the process of cutting out DF as of now.  He's currently at 9:00 consuming only about 3 ounces.  Barely taking DF as well, I almost have to kinda rub his cheeks.  I'm not sure if he'll make it through the night w/o it, but I don't want to take the chance.

Sounds like your LO is doing fine w/o DF or he may not want it.  Plus if he's already rejecting it now, he's probably not hungry and wants to continue his sleep.  When you add his third meal of solids you probably won't have to worry about DF at all.  I know a lot of moms who don't DF, they just make sure he gets enough before going to bed.

I guess alot of this is just trial and error.  I had never heard of first milk and follow on milk.  I didn't realize there were special formulas for different ages.  I live in the united states so maybe it is different in other countries.  Thanks for all the advice I appreciate it! :D

Drew's Mom-
In the US the different formulas are refereed to as stage two. For example Nestle Goodstart 2. I think they are for hungrier babies. We never used them. Some people say they make a difference, some don't.
