12 week old spits up all the time
« on: March 03, 2006, 03:09:59 am »
I have talked to the Pediatrician about this and she just said it is normal. DS is gaining plenty of weight, he is 17 lbs, he was born at 9lbs 12oz. But he spits up a lot. I am wondering if I let him eat too long? I single side feed and he usually eats for 20 minutes. Although sometimes he will suckle for a lot longer if I let him. His sucking gets a lot less strong after 15 minutes, maybe even earlier. Is he eating too much? His spit up is not in great quantity or projectile, it is just constant throughout the day. We keep him upright for at least 20 minutes after each feed.

Hi,
Although I never breastfeed, my lo has spit up continuly and hasen't stopped yet at almost 8 months.
We have gone though everything-milk allergy, soy allergy, reflux, swallowing dysfuntion etc.
He has great weight gain so everything is fine the doctors kept saying, well I still wasn't satisfied, so finally at 7 months we had a ped. apt.  He went over everything in great detail.  There is nothing wrong with me lo, just a spitter upper.  What the ped said is that at the top of our stomaches we have a valve that opens when food enters and closes after, on babies it is pretty flimisy(sp??), some babies more than others and some will take longer to develope.  As in DS case.
I don't really think babies will over eat to much if they are otherwise healthy babies.  (someone correct me if need be)
See my lo is not and has never been a big eater and will sometimes projectile "spit up" while sucking on bottle after only 3 oz.
It took me 7 months for my mind to be at ease about all of this but finally relize that my baby has great weight gain and this is just something I will have to put up with until he grows out of it. (like today we went though about 10 bibs and about 7 outfits, finally just let him go naked :P) today was a bad day though.
so yeah, as long as your lo is gaining good weight, I wouldn't worry about it and just buy a cheaper laundy detergent for all the laundry you will have to do.
There is another posting on here about spitting up, I'll go find where it is and reply back to you.

Hi Again,
It is under Bottle Feeding, titled-FussyFeeders-Dysphagia.
But that also has to do with lo fighting against feedings and gagging, so might not be for you, but you can take a look.

Spitting up can be perfectly normal. Sam spit up a lot and it was connected to my oversupply but it isn't always. I wouldn't try and feed less. It's best with breastfed babies to let them break off at the end when they are satisfied (bottle fed babies do not do this in the same way though and because the flow of milk does not 'slow down' as it does with breastfeeding it is possible for a bottle fed baby to overfeed.)
It's a good idea to sit baby up as you are doing and other than that protect clothing! It does go with time.

My dd1 also spit up a lot, but she was perfectly happy and gaining weight fine, so I didn't worry about it.  As long as your ds is happy and comfortable feeding and straight after feeding, I'm sure there's nothing to worry about.

Nathan would spit up a lot until I cut out the dairy... Tried it again a few days ago and we got ourselves into a whole day and 1/2 of huge spit ups. so I am going to try my best to avoid it if it helps him. Lactose-free milk though seems to be fine...

Thanksfor your replies. DS seems perfectly happy and not in any discomfort at all. It does put my mind at ease to know that it is perfectly normal. We go through a ton of bibs and clothes each day. Cannot wait until it is warm again so he can go without a shirt!

I remember clearly the days of Sam permanently wearing a little cloth bib (sometimes 2!) and when the nappy bag had to include a change of clothes for me too! It won't last forever though. Sam stopped wearing bibs everyday somewhere around 8 months I think. It varies for everyone though.

My DS spit up a lot since the moment he was born.  Wearing a bib is part of his outfit up til this day.  It gradually goes away, he still spits up, but not at often.  Now a days he's gagging himself by sticking everything he can get a hold of in his mouth.  I wouldn't worry about the spit ups.  =)
