why waking at 8:30 or 9 pm screaming on the dot????
« on: March 03, 2006, 18:41:53 pm »
Is my lo traumatized by something?  I'm concerned.  Does anyone know why she would be waking practically every night at the same times screaming?  Sometimes she puts herself back to sleep before I can make it into her room sometimes I need to put my hand on her and reassure her until she's in deep sleep.  Is this separation anxiety?  Is she having night terrrors?  Is she overtired like I've read in some posts?  She has been doing this off and on for several months (she's 8 mos now)  And in that time we've had an 6:30 bedtime and are now on a 7:30 bedtime.  When I switched to 7:30 bedtime (b/c someone suggested that she actually was not tired enough for 6:30 bedtime and so I switched to 7:30) she stopped for a long while---thought this was the answer, but now she's doing it again.  That's what makes me think that it's something emotional????  Or is it that I need to watch how long she is awake between catnap and bedtime, like I just saw in another post?  Any thoughts?

it sounds like seperation anxiaty to me. If she's able to sooth herself or be soothed easily I'm not sure if you need to worry. This is something I'm not that clear about, Maybe someone else has some insight for you too.

Hi Lilapple

The most likely cause of night wakings at the beginning of the night is either not tired enough or too tired at bedtime.

What day time sleep does your LO have?

she does a 40 min at about 9:30 and a 1 hour at about 1 and then a 20 -40 usually at about 4ish or 5 ish.  she wakes at different times in the am  but usually between 6 and 7:30 after having been fed and put back down at anywhere between 4 and 6 (b/c she's been waking at those times and I found it impossible to get her back to sleep any other way.)  I try to keep her wake time to no more than 2 and 1/2 hours in any case.....maybe this could be stretched out but thing is lately after I put her down to sleep after feeding her in the am i myself have gone back to sleep and I'm so out of it that I don't hear the actual time she wakes or if I do then I forget it after I 've gone back to sleep, so I have been guessing as to the first nap.  In any case when I put her down she coos or fusses in her crib for at least 15 min or even 40 before she finally goes to sleep, so what difference really does it make when I put her down?  (and that really is a question I have---how do I know her best wake time if she is hanging out in her crib awake for a while before she finally nods off.)  Oh and by the way, I really do think that she's over tired b/c soon after she wakes from a nap she starts making this irritable fussy sound ---she's also teething her tops.  tia!

Hi again

Yep, it sure sounds like overtiredness.  Have you tried extending the am nap?  Even the pm nap is a little short but the am one is very short for your DD's age.  I suspect that if you can help DD to achieve a little more day time sleep you would probably eliminate this early night waking.

Perhaps the ladies on the naps board could give you some tips.

Good luck!
