goin back to single-side - how to?
« on: March 03, 2006, 18:52:59 pm »
Hi!
Have any of you tried going from 2-side feedings back to single side? how do you do it without letting your LO go hungry?
I wonder if my little guy is getting enough hind milk and if he's not getting lazy...

thanks!

If your LO is having wet nappies and seems happy then I'd imagine he is getting enough to eat. What is making youi concerned about your supply?

Well, I am getting concerned because in the past week, Nathan has been a really fussy eater. He will go on one breast for about 4 minutes and then start fussing. If I try to keep him on, he gets really angry and cries! I try burping him thinking that might be the problem, but the minute he's back on, he cries again. So I go to the other side and then it all repeats itself. So once he gets mad on the second side, I just assume he is done. I tried going back to the first side but to no avail. And if I leave him be he just seems o.k.   ???

Could it be that he is just done? If so, why not just drop the breast instead of crying or fussing? Although I must admit he has been fussy over almost everything lately...

I was not necessarily worried about supply but more about him getting to the richer milk. I'm wondering if he couldn't be fussy cuz he's still hungry but doesn't want to work for it. :-\
Also he's been waking up at night after 3.5-4 hours and won't last longer (ie: 5-6 hours). I know BFed babies don't last as long, but I was wondering if it was a calorie (hind milk) issue, and if that was why he wasn't lasting as long...

what are your thoughts/suggestions?
thanks!
 :)

If he hasn't been experiencing bottles then it's not likely he doesn't want to work for it - it's the good stuff.  :) Some babies who have been using bottles can get frustrated with the slower flow/different sucking associated with breasts.
It could be that he is done - some babies do really speed up. But I agree that if he was satisifed he should just break off without the need for 'fussing'. He could be objecting to you encouraging him to feed. You could offer the same breast again after a longer interval and see what happens.
Are the intervals between feeds the same during the day?
Are you seeing any evidence of teething?
If he's born in December he's just coming up 3 months? This is the age when babies do sometimes become more efficient feeders and some do start teething.
If you feel that he is generally fussier than usual you could check with your doctor - I'm sure he's fine, but just to be safe.

Hi!
He only has a bottle of EBM for the dreamfeed (with a really slow flow nipple). He does feed regurlarly through the day - I wake him for every 3 hour.
As for teething, I don't know. He was drooling real bad around week 10-11 (choking on and spitting up a lot of saliva), but he seems fine now. I've heard that all this drooling isn't necessarily related to teething but to the fact that they start to put more things in their mouths...

So if the daytime intervals aren't shorter and he's not waking hungry it sounds as though he's getting enough.
Could be teething - it comes and goes often with nothing to show for it! It would account for increased night waking!

Yes I have to agree! Teething has alot to answer for I know it always makes my DS very tetchy and off his food. Have you noticed any symptoms? Having read your other posts it sound to me like you are doing all the right things. I'd try and carry on as you are for a few more days and see if the situation doesnt improve. Lots of babies seem to go through these fussing stages and often we can never get down to the root of the problem and one day they just go back to normal.  My only other thought is that he may be getting frustrated if he is going through a growth spurt and is trying to get your milk supply up, this will only be true if he is feeding a little more frequently than nomal. If so then carry on as you are and let him feed when he wants. Anymore questions please ask!  :)
