how many oz's would a 5 mo. old take?
« on: March 03, 2006, 21:37:03 pm »
Hello,

My almost-5-month old ds is exclusively breastfed, and we also give him bottles of ebm fairly regularly.  It seems like this past week the bottles of 4-5 oz I've prepared for him are not enough (he gulps them right down and seems to want more).  How can I know how much he should be getting at this age?  My goal right now is to increase his daytime feed amount, to reduce his need to feed so much during the night.

Thanks in advance,

Jennifer

Jennifer my LO takes 4 bottles per day of approx. 8oz each. He is 17lb 3oz, and usually takes between 30 - 34oz per day.

As the poster above has said a bottle-fed baby would get around 7oz at each feed. However bottle-fed babies tend to be fed less regularly and so need more.  4 feeds in 24 hours would be a very small amount for a 5 month old breastfed baby. You could offer 6oz at first in the bottle. It's a good idea to increase daytime calories but you may find that he still needs a nighttime feed. This is very normal at 5 months. Good Luck.
