what's after cereal?
« on: March 04, 2006, 14:10:28 pm »
Hi
I started my lo on solids starting at 5mth 1wk with the advice of my Ped.
1st wk: I started her on rice in the morning
2nd wk: 7am oatmeal morning (finish with formula)  11am formula 3pm rice
3rd wk:  7am barleyl morning (finish with formula)  11am formula 3pm rice

My ped told me to move to veg but I am little confused and can't find answer in any books or websites...
so here it goes..
1)Do I mix formula with veg?
2)should I continue with solids twice a day schedule?
3)If so, should i introduce new things in the morning every 3-5 days then continue with cereal in the after noon?

If there's a link or a book you can recommend , please let me know.
Tracy's 1st book shows charts to follow but I was told to start with cereal rather than fruit .
Mia started earlier than recommended so I wasn't sure if I should wait until 7mth to give solids 3times a day or not.

overall, LOST

1. You can mix formula, babyrice or potatoes with veg, especially if you are introducing a strong flavour. Formula will give you a smoother consistency & dull down sharp tastes, ideal for starting out. Babyrice can thicken purees i.e apples, pears or even if you have accidentally made it too runny.  Potaotes, when you have your little one accustomed to them can also thicken purees and dull tastes i.e potato and brocoli.

2. Unsure from your post if your ped means to move to a lunch with veg or give veg at b/fast instead of fruit  ???  but if it were me I would add lunch and make it veggies. But if you are unsure check with your Ped.

3. I persaonlly just introduced new veggies at lunch times and continued as normal with breakfast - again this is personal taste and no right or wrong answer.

HTH

I will get you a link, google is playing up on my PC  ::)

Thanks!
I guess I have hard time understanding that there's PERSONAL taste involved not just right or wrong answer.
I am constantly looking for the right answer ???
I have been advise to give 2-4table spoon.  It seem like a lot for a 6mth old.
How much solids do you feed per day?

I started my lo on solids at 4 months and went straight from rice cereal to pureed fruits and veg, including (in no particular order):

zucchini
avocado
banana
apple
pear
peach
mango
carrot
sweet potato
pumpkin
spinach
broccoli
peas
beans
corn
potato
rice
oatmeal
wheat cereal

Once these were well established (around 5-5.5 months), I started introducing proteins including so far:

ricotta
egg yolks
cottage cheese
cheddar cheese (grated)
chicken
kidney
lamb
beef
yoghurt
custard

More recently, we've also introduced tomato, herbs, onion, rockmelon,

The key is to introduce one at a time and gradually (over 2-3 days per new food) so you can jump on any allergy or food intolerance if it emerges. Quite honestly, I would not worry too much about bland fruit and veg. It is the cruciferous veg (that is, wind-inducing, eg brocolli), the acidics (eg tomato, melon, citrus) and the proteins you need to wait on, but as you can see at 7 months my lo is on all these now with no trouble.

My ds was on 3 meals per day from about 5 months. Quantities from around 6 months were roughly

6oz breakfast
8 oz lunch (4oz savoury, 4oz yoghurt etc)
8 oz dinner

I started my DS with solids at 6 months, I pretty much went through all the different veggies and fruits I could get a hold of. =D

DS seems fine with it, in fact he loves it.  My ped recommended introducing veggies before fruits though, so I introduced cereals, then veggies, then fruits.  When you introduce a new food you should give it to you LO for breakfast, that way you'll know if LO is having any reactions to the new food.  Do so for 3-5 days.  If LO is taking the new food well, then introduce something else for breakfast, and move the previous one to lunch and dinner.

HHMM..I think I confused you LOL

Basically say you intro bananas for three days.  Lo takes it well.  Then you into peaches for breakfast and move bananas to lunch and dinner.  At least that's what I did.

Do you plan on making the babyfood yourself?  I didn't do that, but I was thinking about it.  For now I just buy mines pre made.

I found that 2-3 days for a new food was enough, otherwise they will be at school before you introduce everything !  :D

As for making baby food yourself, if you are at all concerned about allergic reactions, I say do the food yourself. You know exactly what is in it and the quality of the ingredients, etc. There are notoriously high percentages of additives in prepacked baby foods (even those intended for infants). I just found it easier and cheaper to prepare my own. For instance, in some apple custard aimed at 4-6 months, I found that there was a lot of milk and egg products, as well as emulsifiers and sugars. At 4-6 months, my lo was not having that much egg and I didn't see the need for extras, including sugar.

Thanks!
I was mostly concerned about when & how much to feed. ( also what)
Here's what I understand.  PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG!!

Some people seem to feed just formula or bf when they first get up.
When we are talking breakfast, lunch or dinner, I interprete it as the 1st, 2nd,and 3rd feeding. ( not neccessarily tied to the breakfast time, lunch time , and dinner time)
Then I give her bottle before I put her to sleep.  So no solid before going to bed.
I start her with solid then finish it off with bottle.  (She seems to be less interested in trying solid after bottle)
Do you wait after giving her solid?  If so how long?  I have been giving her bottle right after solid but I thought she might get indigestion.

No, I am not making my own babyfood. I was going to but I thought I will start that when she passes the puree stage.  Seems like a lot of work.

Home Alone - I spent ages sweating over this and grilling my health visitor to find the RIGHT answers, but truely there is not right or wrong way - you find from our opinions what works for you or tweak them to suit.

The only thing I would say not to do is feed your DS too late in the evening, as it may cause tummy cramps during the night.

Good luck and keep us informed  :D

I started off feeding DS Bottle, solids, bottle all at once..then I noticed that he wasn't taking his solids.  So then I started giving him solids first and then bottle.  Well then he stopped taking his bottle. LOL

So here's my easy now and he's taking both.

7 - wake and bottle
8 - breakfast (new intro to solid)
9-11 Nap
11 - bottle
12 - lunch (solids that he's use to usually cereal with veggie or fruit)
1-3 Nap
3 - bottle
4:30 dinner (solid)
5 catnap (maybe)
6:30 bedtime routine
7 bottle
7:30 bedtime

That's if everything goes perfect which it doesn't, but feeding time is usually on schedule give or take 30 mins sometimes.  Naps and bedtime, that's a whole other topic.  =P

Hi There  ;D
I just started my dd on rice cereal - now just over 5 months, so I am no expert, BUT, my sister and a friend of mine have both used a FANTASTIC book called THE HEALTHY BABY MEAL PLANNER by Annabel Karmel.  I have been reading this in preparation for making some of my own food for our lo, see if your library has it, but it less than $20 in the store.  Give it a go :)
