Beans ok for 9 mo olds??
« on: March 05, 2006, 18:19:30 pm »
I would love to start feeding my baby beans (garbanzo, kidney, black) -- any reason I should hesitate??

Thanks!

None at all, just introduce slowly as you would any other food.  Some beans do cause a bit of gas so beware.  I've given DD hummus and she liked it.  Beans are a great food for babies because they are high in protein.

Beans are great finger foods!  They are full of fiber - really good for them.  Like cwolff said, they can cause gas, so just watch for that.  Hope the beans are a hit!  :)

When you are boiling them, make sure to add lots of garlic. That should help to reduce the gas.

I use them out of a can (he loves them, btw!) -- any tips for reducing gas in that case??
I do think they're give him a bit of gas, though nothing terrible.
He also loves garlic (little Italian boy) -- should I cook some up, mash it and add it to the beans?

What I would do is to put a bit of olive oil in a pan, fry some garlic and then add the beans and fry them for some minutes. You can also use olive oil that already has some garlic in it.

One question... do you wash the beans? I heard somewhere that if you eat conserves, it would be better if you drain the beans and rinse them with water in order to reduce the amount of chemicals you eat.I am not sure.....maybe someone could confirm this?
