Hi!  I am sorry that things are so hard right now.  Will she drink anything out of a sippy cup?  Does she take any other fluids besides the 7 oz of formula.  Are there any medical conditions that you know of that would make her refuse to drink, like reflux?  What has the doctor said about it?  Sorry, so many questions...   :-\

Hi i have tried her with most cups, she does not have any more fluids at all this is why i am so concerned. She has been ill for about 6 months the doctors dont no what it is,we have been to see a dietician she thinks that it is reflux, but they wont tell me yes or no.
She does not have any other syptoms though,we went to see a paeditrician she thinks that its  urine infection, just having problems getting sample to confirm this.

Hi there, sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble.  Have you persisted with the sippy cup etc, or given up when she bats it away?  We had problems getting lo to take any liquid apart from breast feeding.  She wouldn't even take fresh breast milk if it was in a bottle.  We tried a few different bottles, and beakers but she kept batting them away.  In the end we stuck with one sippy cup and offered it to her each day with water in it.  Gradually she took a bit, then a bit more and so on.  It took time but we got there.  It doesn't sound as though you have exactly the same problem as at least your lo will take a bottle at night.  Don't know if this will help.  Be persistant with the paed etc.  If you can't get a clean urine sample can't they use a catheter or something?  It sounds as though you can't hang around for a result as this has been going on for so long.

I haven't used it myself, but I've read on these boards that there is something you can put into milk to 'thicken' it which improves things for reflux babies.  Maybe someone else can get you it's name.

Keep me posted with how things are going.

Tina

Hi thankyou for your advice i am now managing to get two to three 6 ounce beakers of baby milk in everyday.According to my health visitor this is not enough. For the past few weeks to look at my daughter she looks orange, sounds silly, but very true, the health visitor has said that this is due to not getting any fluid and being dehyradted,if this is the case is it doing long term damage to her ?
As for paed i am now waiting to be refferd to another paed one who is in my catchment area,i am now getting angry on how i have pushed from one person to another, and having to wait in between the new paed clinic are not doing app till may,you can see y i am not happy.
Sorry if it seems like i am moaning !!!!!!

Would you mind posting her daily routine, including the amounts of food that she eats at each meal? That might help us figure out what's going on. Thanks!

You don't sound like you are moaning!  It is a very frustrating situation - I completely relate.

I hope that you are able to get in to see the new pediatrician soon!  I would definitely ask the new doctor about the possibility of reflux.  A lot of refluxers will only drink while they are sleeping, so that would definitely be something to look in to.

Did the health visitor think that the orange coloring was jaundice?  If you really think that she is dehydrated (dry mouth or eyes, sunken soft spot, etc), than I might go to doc or urgent care.

Keep us posted.  HUGS

I'm not sure how much solid food she's getting at each meal, but it's possible that she may be filling up on solids and not having enough of an appetite for anything else. If she's still full from her last solids meal, she'll probably refuse to eat or drink anything. Have you tried cuting back on her solids at all? You also might try offering a bottle or sippy right before her solids meal when she may have more of an appetite. You could even try eliminating the snack at 2 PM and replacing it with a bottle or sippy for now.

I hope you're able to get in with a doctor soon to rule out any health issues. Hang in there!

Going back to the orange colour, when my LO was born (5 weeks early) she looked like she had a lovely healthy tan!  Jaundice was mentioned but no-one was particularly worried because the whites of her eyes were just that - white.  Are your DD's eyes white or yellow?  if yellowish then I would definitely get that investigated.  As it turned out for us she did test borderline for jaundice and so was treated for 24hours.

I agree about trying the fluids before a meal to see if you can get more in.  Have you tried plain water?  We used to get some fluids into Kate by diluting fresh juice, but then one day on the off chance I tried water on it's own, and she guzzles much more down than she did with the juice.

HTH

When you go to lillipie.com and go through the steps to get a ticker when you've finished you can see the 'code' for that.  Copy the code for BBC and paste it into your profile signature on this site and it will show up whenever you make a post.

Were you bf'ing before that, by any chance?  Does she just not want the bottle or is she just refusing all liquids?

I don't know if this will help but maybe it's not the liquids she doesn't want but the way you're getting her to drink them???  (just something that came to mind when I read your post but I may be completely off since I don't know the complete history.)

I was bf'ing my son exclusively until around 8-9 months and slowly started weaning him when I got pregnant again. However, he wouldn't drink from a bottle and barely would drink from a sippy cup (def not even 7 oz total!).  He did like drinking straight from a glass, though that was messy and took forever but I had that as my last resort.  I tried giving him a straw (it was a flexible straw with half of the top part of the straw cut off so that it didn't stick into the back of his mouth).  He loved it and has been drinking milk that way ever since.

HTH   ??? ??? ???

Don't worry about long-term effects. I'm quite sure there won't be any but I completely understand how you feel.  DS also went through a short feeding strike and I was so worried that he wouldn't eat enough.

glad to hear she's doing better!  If she likes to feed herself, you'll have a little bit of a messy time in the beginning as she's getting the hang of it but, in the long run, I think it's great that she'll do it on her own so soon!!  Yaay Kailee!

good luck cat with the appointment, I love the name Ellis, we were going to use that name if we had a boy, but we had a girl so shes Ellie.

I had trouble getting my lo to drink out of a sippy cup.  In the end she tried it and each time she got it to her mouth we all cheered and clapped and made a big thing of it.  At first she decided to drop the cup and clap aswell haha, but now shes got used to it and its easier.  It takes time but it works in the end.  Try to make it fun for her when shes drinking, even if it makes you look silly dancing around the room with it.  Ive done that many times beleive me!

Good luck xxxxxxxxx Alison

ps:  I cant beleive how slow its been for you to get seen!  If reflux is diagnosed let me know if you need any advice.  My lo had severe reflux from when she was 1 week up to a month ago, shes 14 months now.
