Introducing Milk into a Beaker
« on: March 06, 2006, 13:49:51 pm »
Hi,

I was wondering if you could tell me when the right age would be to introduce DS milk into a beaker, and at which feed would be the best.

DS has a beaker that he drinks juice from after meals and has mastered drinking out of it, and now was just wondering when the transition would take place.

I have bought a sperate beaker so that he knows which one is his juice.

Hope to hear your views.

Thanks

I don't think there is any set age, I know mums who have introduced a cup or sippy cup from about 4 or 5 months? My DS will take a few oz's from his sippy cup, but at the moment I give him it to play with. I also recently bought a doidy cup for him to practice, but we haven't tried it yet.  http://www.babyzoop.co.uk/doidy.htm

You say he takes juice fine from his beaker after meals, I suppose you could slowly try and introduce some milk into the cup at the start of a milk feed - I am intrested also to hear what others say as I have not reached this stage yet..

Hi Lauren,

Thanks for your advice.  I have just tried what you said about introducing the milk in his cup before his bottle, and he took it at first (probably thinking it was juice), and then gave me the filthiest look going :-\

I don't think he was expecting the milk. I tried again and he started shouting at me, so I gave him his bottle and he happily drank it all.

I guess I am going to have to keep on trying - will persever and see how we get on.

Thanks again for your advice.

It's different for everyone. This is what we did: I introduced the sippy around 6 months. I would just put water or diluted juice in it. She never drank much from it, just played around a bit. I tried to put formula in it, but it never worked. So she would get the sippy with water or juice with breakfast, lunch, and supper and the bottle as snacks between meals. (If you want to put formula in the sippy for meals, you can). Then when Leah was 11 months old I started putting cold cow’s milk in her sippy for meals. Now she gets cow’s milk for meals and water for snacks. If your bottles fall around meal time you could offer formula in the sippy and then follow up with the bottle. They will turn their noses up at the milk or formula at first, but you need to be persistent. Eventually they will understand.

Hi Christine,

Thanks for the advice.  I definitely am going to try and introduce it slowly - I am sure that he will get the hang of it.

Will keep you posted on how it is going.

PS - Leah is beautiful.

Thanks! Your little man is very handsome. I LOVE the smile!  ;D Please do keep us updated. Another suggestion that I thought of was I know that some people can only get their LO's to take milk from a straw cup. Just a thought!
