boiling water for formula
« on: March 07, 2006, 13:51:12 pm »
Hi
I was wondering about boiling water for formula. Some manufacture say to boil 2 min and some 5 min. I don't know which one to go by. And also is using a kettle as safe as a sauce pan??? What is everyone doing. And until what age should water be boiled.

Hi Sylvie,

Not sure about the states but here in Venezuela you have let the water boilf for 15 minutes when your lo is going to drink it.  If it's for sterilizing, then for 5.

I was advised in UK, to boil water completelty (I use a kettle) and leave to cool for 45mins before using it to add formula to.

If for sterlising baby bottles, teats then boil in water for 10 min.

I'm in Canada - we use a kettle to boil the water and then let it cool completely before adding formula.  For bottles and teats use a pot on the stove and boil for 5 minutes.

Hi,
If there arn't any known problems with your tap water just boil for 2 mins.  I ws told to make sure I got the water from the cold water tap not the hot tap.  I know in Canada they say you can stop boiling water at 4months but I waited till 6 months.
The bottles I used said to only boil for 5 minutes when first buy after that wash in hot soapy water and no need to boil or sterilize, besides once a week.

I'm in canada, and the water is safe. so I guess I'll start using the kettle, a lot more convenient. And also, what do you do when leaving the house for the day with baby. Do you prerpair bottle ahead and heat when needed. who long is formula good for at room temp.

Hi,
Formula is good at room temp for 1hour.
a couple things you can do:
1) They do have insulated(sp??) bottles, made by playtex
2) Put your water in bottle and just mix your powder in when needed
3) You could pre-mix it and put a frozen Mr. Freeze in the bottle to keep it cool or just get a bottle bag that is insulated.  You can get those at Walmart right by the bottles or
4) Buy a couple cans of premade formula, which i did when I was traveling from Alberta to New Brunswick.

Just a couple ideas for ya,
HTH :)
PS.  Where in canada are you

I'm not a fan of boiling the water, I live in Texas and I know here they sell Nursery water. It is in a gallon jug, and very cheap. I think it is just distilled water with a picture of a baby on it! It stays at room temp. to make fixing bottles faster and easier!! Our pediatrician recommended it for mixing formula.
Good Luck

And I'll be looking for nursery water. It would beat boiling. Anything to make it easier.

I boil the kettle, and use the dishwasher for the bottles etc.
You can purchase distilled water at the grocery store in big jugs, or you can get one of those giant blue bottles for about $5 at Water Depot.  I have used it before, but mostly I just keep the kettle going.
