How Fast - Bottle Time
« on: March 09, 2006, 15:53:04 pm »
Hi there. I recently switched my DD (reflux but started to get much better, knock wood) from #2 Dr. Brown's nipples (wide-neck) to #3 as she was taking a long time with the 2s and seeming to get bored and frustrated. Plus she's teething. She doesn't seem to have a problem with the #3s - no dribbling or extra mess. But i have a couple of questions:

- If offered an 8 ounce bottle, do I still need to burp her midway? She's 7 months now. If I do stop her (most recent bottle at 6 ounces), she often doesn't want it back until after a break - although she will give me 1-2 good burps.
- How quickly do your babies drink 7-8 ounces? If she were to finish it all in one shot without a burp, it would likely only take her about 8 minutes. 10 absolute tops.

Any tips? TIA.

At 7 months I no longer burped my LO until after her bottle. Truthfully, at this age I no longer burped my LO at all. She would just never produce one, so I stopped. I would say at that age it took my LO around 6-7 minutes to drink an 8 ounce bottle. I too used the Dr. Brown nipples, but I actually never switched from the stage 2. She used stage 2 until she was 1 year old and we weaned from bottles.

Thanks Christine. So if it's not dribbling out her mouth or causing any gagging, etc, can we assume the #3 is NOT too fast for her/is OK?

And if so, we can just let her finish the whole 8 ounces (if she wants) and burp her at the end? I just don't want her to overeat/eat more than she actually wants/needs just because it's coming out fast, KWIM?

Marisa Mom, Calum can take an 8oz bottle in one go if he wants to, BUT usually tends to be sick after it. I have started to take it out half way and make him burp.

Let us know how you get on

If she doesn't have a problem with wind and you don't see any dribbling etc. I would say stage 3 nipples are fine. We just never switched because Leah never seemed to have a problem with stage 2. I agree with Calum's mom though, if you think your LO will become sick after drinking and not burping, then definitely burp. We just never did because my LO never seemed to burp anyhow. I posted a question once about whether or not LO's know when they are full - can they overeat? I got a lot of responses that said that they will let you know when they are done. As long as you do not force them to eat once they turn their head etc, they will not overeat.

She doesn't seem to have more wind or dribbling but is spitting up more with the #3 (also drinking more though). Should I give it another day or two to see if she adjusts? I'm sure it's just because she's eating faster?

I would give it time. If she continues to spit up, you may want to switch back. To be honest, I dont' think there is a huge difference between the #2 and #3 Dr. Brown's nipples, unlike other brands where there is quite a difference. How is she doing time wise?

i found with having a refluxer i had to try and burp him half way through or he would spit up worse at the end or  one big burp at the end would cause the milk to come through his nose. Ryan was a very gassy baby along with reflux so i used to try and get as much burps as i could.he always guzzled his bottles

Hey guys. She was just really spitting a lot with the #3s, and was able to guzzle say 6 ounces in 6-7 minutes. Whereas with the #2 it takes her about 15 minutes to do 6 ounces. I guess for now we'll do #2 nipples unless we see her getting really frustrated or not finishing her bottles? She did finish all 8 ounces with #2 at last bottle - she had 4.5 then burp, then another 1.5 and then needed a short break before the last 2 - so that's fine with me. I guess will just have to see and maybe try the faster nipple again in a few weeks?
