What's the best way to stop breastfeeding?
« on: March 09, 2006, 21:13:51 pm »
My DS will be 6 months old in 2 days - time to introduce solids!! I have read all the great postings and now I have a pretty good idea about the solid schedule but have a couple of questions. If I start with a few spoonfulls at lunch, after how many days do include breakfast as well, and after that, how long do I wait to add dinner? My biggest issue is - if I keep breastfeeding rather than introducing formula, will it be enough to sustain him and if so, till what age will he need bf milk? If I want to slowly start getting him off the breast at the same time, how do I do it? Will I need formula, and if so till what age? OK - you've guessed it, I'm a first time mum!
Thanks

It can be so confusing, can't it? A few things to think about...not sure what time you're planning to do lunch, but make sure it's early enough in the day that you can watch for any reactions or issues that the new food may create. You can always do breakfast as the first meal if lunch is too late in the day. Once you've gotten going with the first meal, it's up to you how quickly you add additional meals. Some wait a few days, some wait a week, some wait a couple of weeks. There's really no right or wrong answer on that one.

As for nursing, you can certainly keep it up as long as you wish and it will be enough to sustain him. I'm not sure when they stop "needing" breastmilk...it has different benefits at different ages. Whole milk can replace breastmilk or formula when your DS turns 1, so if you decide to start weaning him much before then you'll likely need to start him on formula (unless his dr approves starting whole milk early, but most won't even consider it until babies are at least 9 mo). Keep an eye on how many times per day he nurses (it should still be at least 4), his interest in nursing, and how long each nursing session lasts. You don't want solids to take the place of breastmilk or formula for several more months.

Post back if you have any more questions!

So, I can keep him in 4 hour EASY until he's 12 months old, and just slowly replace bf with bottle?  Our day starts at 7.30 usually, but for the last week he's been waking up hungry at 4.30 am, despite the dream feed at 11.30 pm. So his solid lunch would be around 12.30, an hour after bf right? Will he need anything in addition? Water, tea or juice?
Thank you so much for your help!

Yes, you can keep him on 4 hr EASY and switch breast for bottle. And you can do solid meals an hr after or whenever works for the two of you. It's often recommended to start small sips of water from a sippy cup at the same time as solids, since that can help ward off constipation.
