Just need help!
« on: March 01, 2006, 00:29:33 am »
I just need some suggestions and help. This is DD #2 for us and she's now 3 wks old. Came a wee bit early, 2.5 weeks. Had some latching issues in the start, but things improved quickly. Until I developed a post-op infection (c-section) and had to take antibiotics which made her sick. Pumped for 5 days while she took formula. Off antibiotics now, she relatched just fine....but I feel like my supply has dwindled as she is nursing nearly constantly. I feel like she just isn't satisfied with breastmilk. She latches on just fine, but falls asleep at the breast. It's just plain frustrating. I can't spend my entire day nursing w/an almost 4 yr old running thru the house.
Any suggestions? Has anyone else been thru this with their child? I promised myself this time I would NOT make myself crazy with nursing  :-\, but I feel like I'm heading down that road again.

Hi Janet,

Sorry to hear you've had a rough time. I don't have suggestions but wanted to tell you my dd fed constantly for her first 4-5 weeks then became a 3 hour feeder. I would think your lo is temporarily frustrated w/ bfing because she got a taste of the fast flowing formula and now has to work at bfing again but will quickly forget the formula. By constantly nursing her now your supply will quickly increase then you could start her on 2.5-3 hur feeds. Hang in there!

Your dd sounds pretty normal.  My lo slept a lot when I was feeding him when he was that young.  I don't think the sleeping is necessarily related to your supply.  If you are concerned, don't worry about EASY and just feed on demand to ensure your supply is up.

Remember, the extra time you spend nursing right now you save later on, in the way that you don't have to prep bottles, etc.

Good for you for sticking with it... it must be really hard with another lo to look after.

All the best.

Well done for keeping up with the pumping. It's bound to take time for your supply to get back up. I agree that you don't need to worry about EASY right now. Feed on demand and your supply will improve. You may not want to hear this bit but there are many antibiotics that can be taken while nursing and it is very uncommon for a nursing mother to need to give up nursing in order to take them (Dr Jack Newman gets very het up about this advice mothers are given). On this occasion you sound determined enough to get over any troubles. Frequent feeding is very common even for those not building up supply. As she gets older she will get easier to keep awake after feeding.
Good Luck.

It was most definitely the keflex making her sick. As soon as I stopped bf-ing and moved on to formula she stopped all the stomach stuff. My pedi agreed that the keflex at that high of a dose make her so sickly.
We still have awful problems w/nipples though. My supply has returned, although she still wants to eat every 2 hrs  :( So we're not getting much sleep around here. And I want to continue giving her a bottle so she doesn't forget!! My 4 yr old forgot how to take a bottle and refused until she was nearly 7 months old!!! But we can't find a nipple that works well for her. She either chokes on the length or flow....or it's too darned slow! We've tried Avent, Nuk and some various Gerber and Evenflow shorter nipples without much luck. Anyone have any nipples that they swear by??
