There's a whole variety of first foods you can introduce. There's also a lot of different opinions, so I'll just give you mine. Start with baby rice cereal or baby oatmeal mixed with enough breastmilk or formula for it to be more runny than solid. Stick with this for a week or two until the baby gets the hang of moving the solids to the back of their mouth an swallowing. The first few times it will most likely get spit or gagged out, so be patient. Begin thickening the cereal to the consistency of purees by decreasing the amount of BM or formula. Once cereal is established, you can try mixing a tsp of fruit or veggie in with the cereal. Carrots, bananas, peas, applesauce, pears, sweet potatoes and squash are all good first baby foods. Introduce one food at a time, and wait three to five days before introducing another. Take your time so baby can get used to each new food and so you can make sure there is no reaction. We began soilds at 5 1/2 months, and by 8 months we had introduced most of the foods that were safe for her up to that point, including whole milk yogurt which we started at 6 1/2 months as well as egg yolks and tofu which we started at around 7 months. Hope this helps, and try to relax, you have a little while to go!
