Hunger strike? How long?
« on: March 10, 2006, 14:22:55 pm »
Hi! Dd is teething and constipated... weird. At this moment she only wants liquids and cookies. No more purees and some bites of cheese. She doesn´t look interested in eating anymore. Does anyone being through this and how long will it take for her to go back to eat as she used to or this will never go away and have to feed only finger foods? And if so... is there a fingerfood meal planner?  :-\
Thanks.

i would say the hunger strike is probably the combination of teething and constipation. Ryan suffered with constipation a lot untill we got him on a sugar based medicine, he wouldn't eat much as he felt full due to being constipated. when we sorted the constipation and just had teething to cope with, he did eat but just small amounts and purees went down better. if she is eating finger foods fine i would probably say it's the constipation that is causing the food strike , as finger foods are harder to chew than purees.

Like Ryan's mum said, it could be related to teething/constipation, but it could also be a preference for finger foods. It's a developmental thing that a lot of toddlers go through...they suddenly want to be independent eaters and finger food is all they want for a couple of months. There are several threads on this board with finger food suggestions that you might want to take a look at. When Tyler went through that phase, we did lots of steamed veggie chunks and ripe cut up fruit. Sometimes it's easier to make up a big batch and freeze what you don't use. Try offering some healthy finger foods and see if that makes a difference. If all she's been eating is cookies and cheese, those are pretty constipating, so you might find that some fruits and veggies help things along.

Hi, I'm in the same boat - my lo (8 months) doesn't eat much at all (except milk) anymore, its been going on since a couple of weeks before he cut his first tooth.

I've been assured by a Dr that this is very normal during teething and that milk is fine to sustain them anyway.

I give steamed veggies (strips of sweet potato, butternut squash, carrot etc) , wholemeal toast and pieces of ripe fruit to Henry as he refuses a spoon at the moment. He is still gaining weight despite the decline in his solids and very healthy and happy so try not to worry too much?

Try frozen fruit. My sister (who is a pediatrician) suggested frozen blueberries. I know -messy and they stain -but they are good for constipation and my DD loves them! My LO has been refusing a spoon for a few weeks now (since her first tooth) and I have been getting creative with her food. I also cut up really ripe pear and freeze it in chunks, I freeze banana, and some steamed veggies. I think they like the coldness on their gums.  She eats toast (plain whole wheat), cheerios, spagetti with tomato sauce, she had a piece of my grilled cheese yesterday and enjoyed it....
