did I mess with a good thing?
« on: March 12, 2006, 12:27:12 pm »
Hi- I am new to this site and message boards in general so I apologize in advance for any bad form.  My Little Girl is 14 weeks old and was sleeping from 7 PM until 3-4 AM when she woke for a feed then she would wake every hour and I would give her a paci until she settled down, or woke for the day at 6:30. She was exclusively breastfed and has been on EASY since birth (except for those moments when I fell asleep feeding her).  I never instituted a dream feed because I was going to bed at 8PM after a full day with a 2 year old and was too lazy to set an alarm!  7  days ago I began a dream feed at 10:30 with my husband's "help".  He feeds a bottle at 10:30 now.  She has taken to the extra feed and eats about 2-4 ounces then goes right back to sleep, but is also continuing to wake at 3 for a feed.  The positive is that she now goes directly to sleep after each night feed, no more fooling around with the paci.  The bad part is that she no longer has a long night stretch. Her day is well structured.  She eats every 2.5-3.5 hours.  Did I mess up a good thing?  How can I get her to drop the 3 AM feeding? Any help is appreciated.

Hi Welcome to the boards.
Can I suggest you also take a look at some of the sleep forums e.g nightwakings. People who breastfeed are welcome to post here too about sleep issues if they feel that breastfeeding is the key factor but you may also find help on the sleep boards.
If she is waking at 3am almost precisely (even after the new dreamfeed) then she may be waking out of habit rather than hunger. You could experiment with 'wake to sleep' - waking and settling her prior to the usual time or using other ways of calming her back to sleep rather than feed.
HOWEVER I do feel that 2 night feeds at 14 weeks is very very normal. Her patterns may also change as she is moving more, preparing for a developmental phase or even having a growth spurt.

I think what Emma has said is great.

I think you should stick with the df and give it a bit longer.  There could be other things going on right now and it may take a little while for her to start going longer after the df.

Good luck.
