needing advice for feding 3 week old.
« on: March 14, 2006, 07:33:32 am »
Hi,

I have a 3 week old and want to start a routine as soon as possible. I have been reading one of the books (the one that solves all problems.  :))
Isaiah is a really good baby, he will easily be able to get into routine (he pretty much already is) but my question is about the length of feeding.
He seems to only feed for about 5-10 mins and comes off by himself. So I pick him up and try burping him etc, then put him back on. He usually does this about twice, then I think he has finished feeding I will put him to bed and sometimes wakes a little bit later looking for more food.
Am I doing it right? Should I expect him to go for the whole 20-45 mins without a break or is it normal for them to do that?

Help me??  ::)

Thanks.

Congratulations on the new arrival!
I think it's a very good idea to pause to try and bring up gas with a young baby. Some people who double-side feed do it in the interval between breasts. If you are single-side feeding it makes sense to do it in the middle.
It's very normal and I think it's what a lot of people do.
I think at 3 weeks you can expect him to wake up needing a feed. Good luck with starting a routine and it's great if you're able to follow his lead like you are. Remember you've got some big growth spurts yet to come when he may need to feed more often to develop your milk supply so be flexible. If you are following the BW and learning how to 'read' his communications you should have no problem. Good Luck.
