refusing solids all of the sudden.
« on: March 15, 2006, 13:51:57 pm »
My 9 month old has always been eating a lot of solids. Lately she has been sick with a cold (stuffy) and teething pretty bad. since then she has not wanted her solids from a spoon. she will eat cheerio's and veggie puffs, but not much else. not as close to as much as she used to. She does not have an ear infection brought her in yesterday, just a cold and she is at the tail end of it. she is also having a hard time staying on the bottle at times.
can this be teething or her cold or both?? hope it is not a new thing for her. and hope it will pass. she is sleeping great so that is a plus. any suggestions????? ???

Although it could be teething or the cold, that age is the right time for the spoon refusal phase. Will she eat other finger foods besides cheerios and puffs? If so, problem solved...offer her finger foods and try the spoon again every so often to see if she's willing to take it again. It's relatively easy to maintain a healthy, balanced diet on only finger foods. Steamed veggie chunks and ripe fruit chunks are a great way to make sure she's still eating well.

If she will only eat cheerios and puffs, then it's probably related to the cold and teething or is just a phase. Tyler has been through many a food phase where he would only eat certain things like cheerios for several days, especially when he's sick. You can try similar crunchy foods like bits of waffles or toast spread with something healthy like veggie puree to try and keep some variety in there. Hang in there...either way, it will pass, so your best bet is to go with the flow!

I think she is wanting more real food. you are right. she is eating opther things I put down in front of her and loves it. she has always been independant so I think she wants to feed herself. wow it is hard to believe she is growing up this fast. haha. I'll give her real food now. she is ready and trying to tell me this. thanks for your reply I appreciate it.... ;D
