Cheerios are a great starter, and I remember doing lots of toast and well-cooked pasta. Egg yolk is safe after 7 mo, so I'd coat bread in it and fry it up like french toast. Steamed veggie chunks and ripe fruit chunks make great finger foods once she's mastered those. If they're slippery, you can always coat them in dry baby cereal or crushed cheerios.
Guidelines vary, but most I've seen allow yogurt at 6 mo and cheese at 8 mo. Cottage cheese is an exception...it's okay at 7 mo, and large curd cottage cheese can be used as a finger food.
