Carb addict or just not interested in purees anymore?
« on: March 18, 2006, 15:22:12 pm »
HI!  My LO started finger foods - peas, cooked carrots, banana and avocado and recently toasted bread and cheerios... he started about 2 weeks ago.  It was all OK until.... bread and cheerios  >:(  He now only wants these carbs.  He tastes the veggies, but quickly turns frantic looking for cheerios or bread on his tray, and gets very fussy.  He has also now started to refuse his strained veggies/meat etc... after a couple of spoonfuls and cries.  If I offer him a carb (cracker, bread, cheerio) he IMMEDIATELY stops crying or fussing and eats it like I've been starving him?  ???  I even tried starting his meal with a couple of his favorite veggies (soft) and a couple of small pieces of cracker or bread on his tray....well, he picks out each piece of bread/cracker and leaves the rest!  :o  I could'nt believe it!  What do I do?
Should I refrain from giving him carbs at all for now?  He won't starve - right?  I really wnat him to have a balanced diet - he used to love his purees (veggies, fruit...although still likes most fruit, but a little fussy when eating them) now he gets upset.  Please, any ideas?!

[He is still breast fed 3 times/day and gets his last feeding (7pm) as a bottle of formula. We've stopped the df about a week ago.]

Ah, yes, the dreaded cheerio diet. Tyler's been on and off this for as long as I can remember. It's pretty normal to go crazy for a certain kind of food for a few days, then go back to normal. IMHO, your best bet is not to worry about it and let him eat what he wants, provided it's healthy. His main source of nutrition should still be breastmilk and formula now anyway, so it really isn't a big deal if his diet isn't "balanced," although it's still important to only include healthy foods. As long as constipation doesn't come into play, I really don't see anything wrong with letting him eat what he prefers. He'll be back on other foods before you know it. There are lots of ways to still get some other foods into him if it would put your mind at ease. I always used to spread veggie puree on toast, sandwiches, or crackers, and coating veggie pieces in cheerio crumbs or dry baby cereal would often make them "bready" enough for Tyler to eat.

One thing to keep in mind as your LO gets older...toddler nutrition isn't the same as adult nutrition. I've read that it's best to look at their nutritional intake over the course of several days, versus one day at a time, because they do go on streaks where they only want to eat certain things. Of course, keep offering a variety of foods, but go with the flow until he's ready to try them again. HTH!
