OK so NOW I'm worried...
« on: March 20, 2006, 19:33:16 pm »
I had to take DS to a specialist today because of a blood work result that showed low blood sugar.  Turns out that the specialist (endocrinologist) thinks it was a fluke, but she is in fact concerned that he is still refusing solids (8 months old this week).  His twin sister is chowing down on 3 meals a day now, but he absolutely refuses everything we offer, no matter how we offer it.  So now we're being sent to a nutritionist.  I questioned the doctor as to why she was concerned when it was my understanding from reading, from other doctors, etc that there was no hurry for solids and that it was only at one year when it becomes essential to the diet, but she was adamant that they should be on solids at 6 months and that they need the extra nutrition and calories in order to grow properly.  It's weird how there can be so much variation out there when it comes to solids or no solids...and everyone seems so sure that they themselves are correct!

Anyway, it will be good if this nutritionist can get us on the right track because it's hard to maintain one type of schedule for one twin and a completely different one for the other.  I long for the day when I sit them side by side in their high chairs and feed them the same food!

Sarah, I'm having the same problem with Sam.  Lydia LOVES solids, she has her mouth open before I've even got the spoon out of the bowl!!  But Sam - I find I have to touch his bottom lip just so he opens his mouth, then I can shovel it in.  Even then, most of it comes back out  ::)
Have you tried experimenting with warmth/consistency etc?

That's all folks!
(Well, maybe another girl if I can convince DH!)

Hey there!

Thanks for the reply.  The fact that you can actually get some food in there is a step ahead of me, LOL!!  With my DS he starts screaming just at the IDEA of the food.  But yes, we've done different textures, temperatures, spoons, no spoon at all, finger foods (he put it in his mouth like any other toy and started screaming out of fear)...you name it.  We've even done the dreaded "sneak it in when he's not looking" a few times, thinking that once he tastes the yummy "food choice" he'll be eager but he just acts like we're trying to kill him.

Anyway, I'll keep persevering while trying to avoid giving him a complex and eagerly await this appointment with the nutritionist.

Good luck with Sam!  How old are your two again?
