Weaning question...
« on: March 21, 2006, 19:12:46 pm »
Hello all, I'm new to these boards...just wondered if I could ask you some weaning questions?

James is 4.5 months and we started weaning on Sunday, I gave him a few spoonfuls of baby rice with his 11am bottle, and he seemed to enjoy it....I've done this for 3 days now and I just wanted to know how long I should stick with the rice for before I try veg, etc? Should I really give it before or after his bottle? Do I replace his 11am bottle with proper food???  ???

Sorry to bombard you all with these questions, I can't get hold of the HV and my mum is on holiday and I don't know who else to ask!

Thanks in advance!!  Jo x

Welcome Tonyswife  :D  quick reply to you before feeding time....

From experience with my own weaning;
I personlly sick with new things for 3 days, some say up to a week, I feel you would never get your LO weaning if you left it a week.
Give after his bottle, do not replace any bottles at this stage. Milk is his main source of vitamims etc at the moment. Milk intake should stay roughly the same.

Its ok to ask questions it is a very confusing time for parents  ??? ::)

Others will answer you are well with their experiences  :)

I agree with Calum's Mum don't started dropping any bottles just yet at this stage Solids is just to get them use to it. We didn't stay on rice cereal on its own for long DD didn't really like it we quickly started introducing fruit and vege's with no problems. I think it is safe to mix a bit of vege with the rice cereal.
Good luck it is an exciting time introducing solids at the beginning. My DD has been on it since 4 months and now can't get enough of it, she much prefers it to her bottles. She is now on 3 decent sized meals and just introduced a snack in the afternoon.

we did baby rice for 1 week and then introduced a new food for 3 days at a time, of course it took weeks and weeks to get her into all the different fruit and veg and finally onto meat but we have loads of allergies in the family so I needed to be sure she would be OK and besides there is time when you start earlyish as I did and you are.  We didn't start reducing her milk until she got onto 3 meals a day and then only when she got fussy with her savoury and we needed to make sure she was hungry enough to eat.  :P
