Organic? and yogurt question
« on: March 22, 2006, 23:00:22 pm »
Hi there,
Apologizes if this question has been posted before. Do all you moms make babyfood exclusively out of organic veg/fruits? I'm buying 80% organic but some veg and fruits are so hard to find organic and to get the other organic stuff I have to go pretty far. Soo...wondering if some of you serve non organic and which ones are safe. Also wondering when I can give my DS yogurt. The super babyfood book says 6 months but I've also read 7/8months? I would really like to start that as I'm running out of foods to give him. He's been on solids since 4.5 months and just turned 6 months. Thanks so much!

Well.... in an ideal world, sure, I'd go all-organic 'cause it would be available and affordable.

In real life, though, I got my frozen veggies, even though Super Baby Food said not to use frozen, then cook them and freeze them again, and we were all fine. Now our local grocery chain carries their own brand of organic foods, including frozen veggies, so I get them when I can, or I get fresh organic when I can, and I try not to sweat it too much.

Yogurt - I got around to doing that around 6-7 months, maybe 8 with Natalie? She started solids a bit later than Josie. I used Stonyfield Farms organic whole milk - SOOO rich and creamy!!!! YUM!!!

I use organic fruit and veg wherever I can but at the moment can't find organic peaches anywhere (and DD loves them with bananas) so have had to use normal ones.  I make sure all meat and milk and yoghurt and cheese is organic because I reckon its the animal products where there could be more of an issue with the growth hormones and things.

of course I try to rememeber that I wasn't raised on organic and I seem OK!  ::)

oh and the yoghurt - I gave it to her at 6.5 months and it has become a firm favourite

I don't use organic - just regular veggies and fruit. Mostly fresh, but occasionally frozen peas and sweetcorn.

I gave yoghurt at 6mo.

If you're stuck for ideas, have a look at the stickies at the top of the baby food recipes pages for links to good websites and other books to try.

Thank you all so much for your input. I guess if I can't find a particular organic item I shouldn't stress about giving DS non organic. I should save that for things like the upcoming daylight savings time LOL. I'll try the yogurt tomorrow..can't wait to see his reaction! Thanks again :)
