Back to Early Wake ups!!
« on: March 23, 2006, 00:34:25 am »
We had two glorious weeks of sleeping in until 630-700am.  One day until 800am!
This week we are back to 530am.  They are waking a few times a night but settle back down.  Their naps went from 2+ hours to 45 min- 1 hr 30.  My boys are teething canines and have runny noses and congestion.  They are going down for their nap between 1030 and 1100 (was noon before) and then they are exhausted at 400pm.   Is there anyway to get through this easier?  Should I put them down for a 2nd nap?  Should I put them down for bed earlier? If so how much?  They have been going down at 7pm.  Thanks for letting me vent.  Kelly

Is there any way you can get the naps back to noon or even 12:30?  In small increments?  Otherwise they are having really long afternoons (as you know)  I don't have much time right now but I will get back with some more thoughts.

Hang in there!

HI Kelly,
did you read mypost post in this forum about early wakeup soutions?
first, they are going to be superovertired b/c  of their nap being so early. how long is their nap and what time do they wake up? let me know.
i wouldn't hesitate to put them down at 5:30 or 6pm. i've been doing it with meg for the last week and a half and she's been getting 12hrs again. her nap hasn't lengthened yet, so she's overtired as well, hence the early bedtime but it is really helping/working.
let me know more and i'll see if i can help

Thank you both for your replies.  I'm starting to suspect an ear infection with the boys.  Motrin usually helps with the teething but they are still so miserable after taking it.  I'm going to take them in to the Dr. tomorrow.  I did put them down for two naps yesterday because they were so tired at 9:00am.  Both were only 45 min but it seemed to help a bit.  At night they got up at 12:30am and settled back down until 5:50am.  Atleast DH is home to help me today.  Wish me luck!
Thanks again, Kelly

Hope your appointment gives you some insight into the problem.  when you mention that they woke at 12:30 last night, is it because one wakes the other (if they're in the same room) or is it a "twin" connection.  Just curious...I've always been fascinated by twins.  Good luck!

Nicole, since you've been putting Meg down earlier, does that mean she's still waking at the same morning time?  If so, that's great.  How long would you keep doing this for?  Would she at some point think that's her new schedule, (meaning would this reinforce the early wake up?)  Or, do you stop putting her to beads early once her nap lengthens?  I only ask because our guy at time will wake early for a couple days in a row....I was thinking of maybe trying your strategy in the future.

HI Zelka,
well, what has happened as before she was waking early and only getting 10.5-11.5hrs of sleep, now she gets a full 12hrs sometimes a bit more. so if i put her down at 6, she's up at 6, ifi put her down at 6:30, 6:30....
today she napped from 1:05 to 2:55pm...almost 2hrs!! so i put her to bed at 7:15...so she'll sleep to 7:15am tomorrow:)
does that help.....?

Hi Ladies,

I was right 3 infected ears  :o!  The boys are both on Amoxicillin now so hopefully they will have some relief soon.  Slept pretty good last night but still up very early.  I'm sure it will take us awhile to get back on track.  I'm not sure how I will even attempt that.  Anyone ever try homeopathic medicine for ear infections?  Seems like my boys get them when they are teething.

Nicole... I think I will try your stragety if the early mornings continue after they are feeling better.  I was always so scared to put them to bed that early in fear they would be up at 400am.  Glad to hear it worked for you.

Zelka...not sure if the boys woke up because one woke the other or if it is a twin connection.  They do sleep in the same room seperate cribs.  Sometimes one will wake up crying and yelling and the other one doesn't budge.

Thanks again,
Kelly

I don't want to say glad to hear that they have ear infections but I am glad that maybe you've found some insight into your problem....hang in there over the next bit! ;)

Nicole, I see exactly what you mean....makes sense! Thanks for the clarification!

Kelly ~ On the days when they nap so much less, I would definitely put them down for bed at night earlier. When my dd skips her nap, I put her down an hour earlier. She wakes up at the same time in the a.m. or later than normal because she needs to make up the missed sleep! And she's not as overtired as she would be if I put her down later. And since your los are so much younger I would do the same with a short nap. It is clearly the colds/ear infections that is obstructing their sleep but they are tired!

Hi Ladies,
Let me update you on the latest.  I got the boys back on schedule with the help of day light savings time.   ;D They slept until 700am on Sunday and 730am on Monday with naps from 1230-230.  HEAVEN!  I put them in bed between 730-745pm both nights.  Last night I put them down at 715pm because they seemed to be getting tired.  They talked and rolled around until about 750pm.  They were up this morning at 445 am!!!!!  :o  I'm so frustrated and tired.  I don't know what I'm doing wrong.  All canines are most of the way through and no sign of the ear infection.  Could it be the 2nd molars already?  or I know when they reach milestones that it interupts sleep.....maybe getting ready to talk more?  Do they need more awake time? I try and wear them out during the day because they are both very active boys.   It is miserable when they are on this schedule...any advice or positive words would really help me.  I'm at my wits end with this!
Cecilia,  I was looking for some thoughts on homeopathic medicine. I'm going to research it more and let you know what I find.  I found an article linking reflux with ear infections and both my boys had reflux.

Hi Kelly - first off {{{big hugs}}}
Our children are less than 2 weeks apart, Olivia did this as well not too long ago.  her eye teeth are poking through, she(we) has always had a terrible time with teeth & yes, this is a huge part of the sleeping problem you are going through, IMO of course.  It lasted about 3 weeks, a few days I thought we were back on track & she wakes up from a nap or to start her morning & I KNOW she is not her usual self right away...so rather than being frustrated by it I tried even harder to amuse her with little "quiet" type games, trying to take her mind of her misery(& mine too  ::))  Seems to have helped.  those 3 weeks seemed like forever going through them, but now that I look back it was not so bad - we as mom's always fear or anticipate the worst, & when it's not so bad we are not any more relaxed because we've just stressed ourselves so bad - I really wish there was a healthy no side affect chill pill, KWIM ;).
Anyhow, I think the boys are growing mentally.

In the last 3 weeks Olivia's vocabulary has added about 15 new words that she uses daily & her memory is so unbelievable - I can't believe my little baby is officially a little girl with huge Independence & likes to be offered choices.  Take a step back one day & absorb how big the bays are & how far you have come - you have done an EXCELLENT job raising not one child but TWO!!!  Hats off to you! :D :D

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement Cecilia!   :) I really do need to try and relax and not be so frustrated.  When they both are so fussy and not sleeping well it is so hard on me.  I think maybe it is a combination of the teething and talking.  My boys only say a few words but have really been trying to "talk" to me lately.

Your right it is hard to believe how fast the boys are growing up.  I usually try to cherish every moment even the bad but the sleep thing has me worn out. My DH has volunteered to get up with them tomorrow (if they wake early) and give me a little break.   ;D
Thank you so much for your kind words it lifted my spirits!

Your boys seem to have good sleep habits and cycles and i think the restlessness is due to them teething (yes the 2nd molars are a possibility) and also the time change. I've found my lo does wacky things (short naps, early wakings) on random days for a 3 week period afer a time change. AGGG once you have them figured out!...

Anyways, consistency is the only thing that helps me get him back on track. Same bed times, same naptimes, early bedtimes when nap is bad... do the same over and over and it will payoff in the end.

My hat off for you. My lo is only 2 days younger than your lo's and i somedays want to cook him in the oven!!!!!!!!!!!! i don't know what i'd do with two like him!!!!!!!!! probably had runaway by now LOL. Hang in there. It will get better!

Thanks Florencia for the response.  We had two pretty good days of naps and sleeping past 600am but back to 515am this morning  :o.  I peeked in and they both were standing in their cribs talking (babbling) to eachother.  It was really kind of a cute moment even though I'm exhausted.  At least it is Friday and DH will be home to help me tomorrow...now if I can just get through the today!

I wanted to ask you Ladies also if your LO's have any toys in their cribs.  The boys each have a little monitor that displays little birds on the ceiling and plays music.  I was wondering if that was stimulating them to stay awake.   I hear them push the button in the middle of the night sometimes so I think it might help them get back to sleep.  Would like your opinion on this.

What is ok in the crib probably depends on the child--I know my dd would find the light thing too stimulating - but then EVERYTHING stimulates her--she's a really spirited little imp!  It may be that your boys are comforted by it though, especially if it's something they've always had.

Harrison ignores stuff in his cot, and when he was waking early I was putting a few toys just outside at the end where he stood up in the morning and could reach them! Anything to keep him quiet for a few minutes longer......mistake I think - I am sure he started to wake and jump up to get to the toys (and throw them on the floor!)

Now they have gone he seems to lie down for longer..........

yep, i beleive it depends on the child. Mine, for example has to have a "collection" of items and he can tell if one's missing and refuses to go down if "everyone" isn't there. He's got a dog, 3 bears, a bee, a wrestling guy ::), 2 ducks and a ball. Besides his blankie and the ocean wonders fisher price thing. I just put that one in "lock" cause sometimes he'd roll and kick in his sleep and turned it on with one foot and that would wake him in the night. But when he wakes, he's able to unlock it and turn it on and that buys me, on a good day, up to 45 mins of he amusing himself. BUt for some other kiddos i know, they just get more worked up with things in the crib. Seems that your lo's are ok with the toys they have.

Bad stuff they were up so early today. Damn time change!

Thanks for your opinions on the crib toys. I was just trying to think of what might be disturbing their sleep. Here is the update.
The boys napped only 1 hour yesterday and were up several times and finally up at 530am.  We took them back to the Dr. to make sure the ear infections had cleared up and found out all 4 years still infected!  :o  So now we are on a stronger antibiotic.  My poor boys..I hope this works.  At least we know that is probably what is interupting their sleep.  Wish me luck!   Kelly

Well here I am again.....We just finished the 2nd dose of antibiotics on Sunday and both boys woke up Monday with low grade fevers and fussy.  Last night they were up every couple of hours crying.  I gave Motrin at 300am and they have been asleep since.  I can't believe that after 2 doses of Antibiotics that the ear infection would still be there.   :o
Has anyone else experienced this?  It has been close to 1 month now and my DH and I are exhausted and frustrated.  I'm going to make an appointment with the DR. today.  I thought maybe the 2nd molars were starting (both boys have their fingers in their mouths) but I don't see anything.  Thanks for any advice you can share,  Kelly

Hey Kelly, hang in there!
Olivia is just a monster w huge attitude these days so I feel like putting her up for adoption these days ;)
Poor boys, hope the meds work out better.  About the toys in the crib - usually Olivia has soft quite toys & one rattle (so I can hear she is awake)  This buys me time in the am if she wakes earlier & in a pretty decent mood.  If she is being a bear & uncooperative, like nap time for example, I remove them because she will play (more like throw) & not settle but become more stimulated & way overtired.  I'll just sit in the rocking chair or read a book to her (or I'm sitting on the floor)while she's still in her crib with her Mr. Bear.  When she's in that kind of mood I usually sit in the rocker with my head in my lap (like preparing for an airplane emergency landing ???), this way we have no eye contact & I'm not looking at the clock & she knows I'm still there. I stick around until she is asleep, then sit for exactly 4 additional minutes - temping to leave sooner but it always back fires on me.  This has helped her tremendously & gives me time to think about things aside from what I could have been doing if she would have fallen asleep 45 min ago like she was supposed to.  Naps are a must in our house hold ;)

TEETHING - OMG!!!  I hope the next baby is a laid back, carefree, wants to sleep all day, surprise just cut a tooth :o type of baby...I can dream can't I???
We would like to think teething is always the culprit & usually it is a huge factor,IMO, because teething is continuously happening for our lo's at this age during the same time they are sick, milestones...teething STOPS for no mom!! ::)

We'll get through this, I'll be thinking of you next time I'm a sitting prisoner in DD room ;D

Hi there!
Sorry to hear about your boys ear infections ...how awful. I feel for you though, as it is very tough on Mum. Just to let you know that my son Jay is 2 yrs 4 months and the only way we can get him to sleep until 6.30am is to not let him nap at all during the day. He goes to bed at 8pm - if he falls asleep during the day for even 10mins, he won't go to bed until 9 - 9.30pm and will still wake up at the same time in the am. The days can be long, I can tell you and he can be very, very tired but he is as strong as an ox, and this is the only method that works for us!!

2 children. Luca 9yrs(touchy/Spirited/active!!)and Jay 2yrs 6 months (determined/persistant) .

Thank you all for your kind words.  Here is a quick update.  The boys had their 2nd dose of antibiotics and still woke up Monday morning with low grade fevers , not eating, vomiting.  Went back to the Dr. on Tuesday and the Ear Infection is cleared up (GOOD NEWS) but the boys have picked up some yucky virus going around with cold symptoms, fever, vomiting and diarrhea...GREAT!  It is not our Month to say the least.   :'(  She said it should last about 5 days.  Today they seem to be feeling better but not great.  I just hope their ears stay clear or we will have to see an ENT.

Hope you all enjoy your weekend,
Kelly
