This is a really silly question...
« on: March 23, 2006, 19:20:09 pm »
But I was wondering:  do you let your kids play with their food while eating solids?  For example, I unintentionally kept the bowl of yogurt within arm's reach of my dd (9 month old) one day and her curiosity just made her reach for it and play.  I feel like if I don't let her I am stifling some kind of learning experience but when I do let her she gets so distracted and doesn't really eat anymore.  I don't want to be an anal mom and not let her explore things but I also don't want her to make a huge mess AND not eat... Like I said, very silly question, but it has been on my mind :)

I absolutely do because I have to admit I think the mess is fun  ;D plus I've read that it will encourage them to feed themselves and learn those skills. It makes things go a little slower, but ds will still eat if playing too.

My DH can't stand the mess though, so if he does the solid feeding he gives DS the spoon and/or stuff to play with once they are done. You might try that tactic.

yes, yes, yes I see it as a definite stage towards her feeding herself.  in fact I give as much finger food as possible and allow her to take the spoon if she wants.  its a messy business but fun  8)

oh yes mess is best!!!

Why not give your lo a spoon to hold while your feeding, that way your lo can practice feeding herself at the same time as you feeding her.  That way your guaranteed that it goes down the hatch rather than just over you or the floor.  My lo's decided that she likes to blow raspberries everytime I try to feed her now!  It can be funny (although I dont let her see me smirking), but can also be a pain.  I have put down a big plastic sheet I got at mothercare now under her highchair, so that everything lands on that instead of the floor.  Babies love to play with there food and its all part of their development.  Feeling textures and lumps etc.  After a while they tend to get bored of fiddling with it and eat properlly but if you prevent them learning then this can make feeding time hell.

Alison, I was so relieved to read your post! My little guy still won't eat most finger foods (he just turned one last week) but will plays with them - which I was trying to stop. I'll let him play from now on!
