Bottle + Breast+ confusion for a friend
« on: March 24, 2006, 04:06:05 am »
Just posting this on behalf of a friend who has twin 8 week old boys. She does both bottle and breast, although she informed me it is more bottle than breast--breast it apparently when they are hungry in between(I've put the bug in her ear about that situatiion)
Is it true she should be doing breast first and then bottle? I remember seeing that on a babywhisperer show...anyways! It seems they can't go any longer than 2 MAYBE 2.5 hours. I think it is because she gives them breast when  they maybe should be sleeping--and its becoming a prop..... My LO wasnt on EASY till 3 months...so Im foggy on the pre 3 month stuff.

Just wondering about your thoughts/advice on this.

Hiya, if she is bf, I would think that feeding every 2.5 - 3 hours sounds about right. It will help to establish her milk supply.
It will seem like she is non-stop feeding, but the feeds will stretch out in time.

That's all folks!
(Well, maybe another girl if I can convince DH!)

If she wants to keep up with the breastfeeding she should offer breast first. Otherwise her milk supply won't be maintained. If she offers bottle first her breasts won't create the milk or the type of milk needed for future feeds and supply will dwindle. 2.5 - 3 hours is a very normal interval for a bf baby. I'm not very experienced with combining breast and bottle logisitics. It might be worth her making a quick phonecall to a support line for advice.

I have been doing breast + bottle since day one. I was told to do breast first so that they get as much as possible of breast milk and then top up with formula.  This will also ensure frequent and full stimulation of the breast for optimum milk production.

Thanks for the replies, I will be sure to pass them on!
I think she actually prefers bottle...but we'll have to see!
Thanks again

I agree!!  They might fill up on formula if they get that first.
Blessed beyond measure.
